Why is it that we are the last person we help? We are always there to help friends, co-workers and family members when asked, but by spreading our self so thin, we don’t have any “me-time” left for our own self-care. And if you happen to be a caregiver, it is even worse.

Regardless of how gregarious a person you are, we all need some time alone that we can call our own. Whether it is soaking in a hot bath sprinkled with a few drops of lavender essential oil, with a lit candle, soft music and sipping on a glass of wine, or doing some therapy shopping, having some alone time and doing what you enjoy is one of life’s little pleasures.

But what is frequently the case, is we run our self ragged, collapse in our bed at night and then lie awake thinking about all the things we must do tomorrow. And when tomorrow comes, we get up and do it all over again. And because we are durable people, we can get away with doing this for a while, but eventually it will catch up with us.

And then what happens when you go down – especially if you are a caregiver for a person? Who is going to take care of them while you are down?

So, the better plan is to be selfish, and carve out some me-time in your day for you. It is a win/win for everyone!

Tidy Up Your Workspace and Home

There is something to be said about the negative effects of working and/or living in an untidy area. A cluttered workspace or a cluttered home can lead to a cluttered mind. It may take a bit of time, but the mental health benefits associated with tidying up areas where you spend a lot of time can be surprisingly large.

Try Building a Positive Vision Board

One of the most surprisingly effective things that you can do for your mental health is to build a positive vision board. For those unfamiliar with vision boards, they are boards with visual images, inspirational quotes, and other things that are designed to put you in an uplifting mood. Think about some things that make you motivated and happy and then put them on your vision board. Stick the board somewhere where you will see it often, and it can really help to improve your overall mental health.

Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is somewhat similar to meditation, but it is a lot easier to do and just as good for your mental health. Mindfulness basically involves taking some time (it can be as short or as long as you want) to just clear your mind. You just sit with the quiet and try your best to focus on nothing, which helps with things like stress and anxiety.

☐ Brush your teeth every morning, and before you go to bed at night. Sadly, many people do not brush their teeth the required 3 times a day. Begin brushing your teeth each morning and each night for 3 to 5 minutes as a dental health self-care practice.

☐ Meditate regularly. Meditation has been used for stress and anxiety-relief for thousands of years.

☐ Start thinking “clean and green” when you eat. A predominantly plant-based diet of raw or minimally cooked foods is linked to a long list of health rewards.

☐ Take a walk. Get out in nature. A simple 10 or 15 minute walk in a natural environment can improve your mental and emotional health metrics.

☐ Forgive yourself. Mistakes happen to everyone, and you are going to fail from time to time. Forgive yourself and move on.

☐ Read a book. Watch an educational movie. Expanding your brain is as important as is your physical health.

☐ Drink more water. The human body needs about 1 gallon of water to pass through its system each and every day. Dehydration has been linked to hormonal imbalances that can play havoc with your emotions, and cause mental impairment and a number of physical health issues.

☐ Make your bed each morning. This simple self-care practice is a keystone behavior which leads to more organization and less stressful clutter.
