Hello and welcome to the series on automatic behaviors. Over this course, we will discuss some techniques you can use to increase your level of awareness of your automatic behaviors, like:

  • effective journaling
  • talking to others
  • checking in regularly with yourself
  • using cognitive behavior therapy (CBT)

But before we start talking about these techniques, we first must define just what is an automatic behavior. According to MedicineNet.com, it is “A behavior that is performed without conscious knowledge and that does not appear to be under conscious control.” And they go on to say that it “involves doing something automatically and not remembering afterwards how one did it or even that one did it.” Common examples include nail-biting, smoking, overeating and something as simple as swinging your foot or even tapping your foot.

One phenomenon associated with automatic behaviors is called automaticity. It is the ability to do things without really even thinking about it or knowing you are doing it at the time. For example, driving a car. You don’t even process how you are going to start the engine; you just do it while thinking of other things at the time. Walking is another one; you don’t have to think about putting one foot ahead of the other.

But there can be a downside to automaticity as it can lead to errors of which some could be costly. Take your commute for example. If you take the same route at the same time each day, you could be driving on autopilot where your subconscious is doing the driving while you are thinking about what you must do for the day.

For example, have you ever driven through a stoplight and ask yourself later if the light was green when you went through the intersection, because you don’t remember consciously checking it! Automatic behavior at work. One way to correct this would be to take a different route once in a while and force yourself to drive consciously.

That wraps it up for this first lesson. In the next lesson, we will talk about effective journaling as a tool to help notice some automatic behaviors you might have and not know it. Be sure to read that one.

Look to the future

One of the things which NLP encourages people to do is imagine their future and imagine achieving what they desire. When it comes to weight loss, you can imagine what life will be like when you’ve achieved your weight loss goals. Think about how you’ll feel, think about the things which you might be able to do which aren’t possible at the moment, and think about how much healthier you will feel after reaching a healthy weight.

Work out your triggers

Many of us have triggers when it comes to eating. For some people, being around other people who like to choose unhealthy options is a trigger. For others, stress and anxiety can cause them to eat the wrong things or fall off track when trying to lose weight. NLP can help you to work out what your triggers are by encouraging you to reflect more on yourself and your lifestyle. This then means that you can avoid your triggers as much as possible which will help you to stay on track with your healthier lifestyle.

Figure out your barriers

As with many other ambitions and goals, there are likely to be barriers. Are you prevented from joining the gym because of self-confidence issues or because of a lack of funds? Making a list of the things which are stopping you from achieving your goals can help you to organize your thoughts, both externally and internally. You can then focus on some smaller sub-goals which will help you to overcome the barriers to your main weight loss goal.

Find a role model

NLP helps with changing your mindset and the way you think about weight loss and your journey to your goal weight. A role model can help you to retain a positive mindset – looking up to someone who has been on a similar journey to yours can often help us to gain momentum and stay on track. You could find a role model in someone you know, a work colleague, a celebrity, or other public figure you admire.

Focus More on Your Goals and Achieve More With These Ideas

When asked what your New Year’s resolution is, you may say “exercise more often.”  That is not a goal, but a vague statement.  If you state with certainty, “exercise 20 minutes every other day,” then you are setting a goal that is focused and achievable.

Let’s explore some techniques on how to focus on your goals and achieve more results.

Make a List

Perhaps you may have applied for a specific job, and decided to make a list describing your strengths and weaknesses.  The same focus is needed to list your goals in order to achieve them, with one exception. Add a third column indicating a timeline.  For example: Let’s assume you want to quit smoking. This will be the title of your worksheet. In the first column, list the number of cigarettes you smoke a week. The second column will feature the cost of purchasing cigarettes, and the third column will feature how much you cut down each week. Eventually, the number of cigarettes versus the cost will decrease the amount in column three.  It is realistic, effective, and sends a subliminal message to your subconscious indicating the cost is outweighing the effect.

Prepare a Chart

In an Australian TV series about a cattle ranch run by women, the overseer had a chart in her room.  It was her five-year goal.  On the chart, she listed her educational pursuits; her first jobs; and her eventual goals, with her ultimate goal listed at the bottom.  The uniqueness of the chart was akin to a chart one may obtain to list a family tree.  Every goal met was checked off. Using red and black pens to underscore certain achievements, she was well on her way to her final goal; that of owning her own cattle ranch.  In this case scenario, art did imitate life.

Charts are a way in which one can really focus and measure their ability to attain certain goals.  If additional education is required; add that to the chart.  If an internship is needed to obtain a prime spot in an organization; add that as well.  Charts are maps which not only give direction, but keep us on the right path to success.  So often we veer off, only to find we are lost and unable to navigate our way back. So too, a chart is a constant reminder of where we’ve been, and where we are going.

The next time you are determined to reach a new goal in your life, write down the steps that will guide you to it.  Be specific in your detail, and use it as a roadmap to achievement.  Focus on it; memorize it, and become empowered by it.  You’ll never fail.

Take care of your physical health.

It is true many people in the United States do not have access to proper health care. However, if you do have health insurance, it’s important to get regular medical check-ups. This one action can help you catch illnesses while there is still time to treat them and before they reach the point they can’t be treated.

Discuss with your doctor when you might need to take certain tests. Previously the medical profession recommended that women have baseline mammograms when they’re 40 with additional mammograms every two years following that. Recently the recommendation has been changed to having the baseline mammogram at age 50. There are other tests which doctors prefer to perform at certain ages such as yearly pap exams for women starting the age they become sexually active and prostate and colonoscopy tests for men when they reach a certain age.

There is so much you can do to take care of your physical health. This could be as simple as exercising or eating better or it could be more complicated such as changing your entire lifestyle. What are some ways you can take care of and improve your physical health?

Get enough sleep each night, but try not to oversleep. Doctors have determined the importance of getting between 6 and 8 hours of sleep per night for adults. Some studies indicate that sleeping more than 9 hours in a 24-hour period may actually shorten your lifespan. Those who get less than 4 hours also seem to have increased death rates than those who slept the optimum hours of 6 to 7 hours per night.
