Steven Kotler is an author and peak performance coach. He says that most people spend time working on things they’re already good at. They work on their strengths instead of their weaknesses. There’s nothing wrong with this. In many cases, you can magnify your positives to such an extent that they choke out your negatives.

This is a natural behavior. We hate looking at our negatives. People instinctively focus on the things they do well. This makes them feel better about themselves. A lot of us even unconsciously put ourselves in situations and environments where our strengths are accentuated and our weaknesses are covered up.

Successful people also work on improving their strengths. One thing they do that underachievers don’t is that they work on their weaknesses.

Kotler has interviewed and coached high performers and says they all work on their flaws. Many high achievers say that they are only as strong as their weakest link. This is why they are more than happy to spend whatever time and effort is necessary to reduce the number of weaknesses they have. The problem is, it’s difficult to identify areas that need improvement for several reasons.

People Are Naturally Biased to Overlook Their Negatives

Here’s the biggest difficulty in working on weaknesses. Most people turn a blind eye to them. You might know what you really need to work on. Even so, you and most other people don’t like to face up to their flaws or areas of improvement.

We consider them inadequacies. If we spend any significant time looking at our flaws, this can create negative emotions. Self-doubt arises. We wonder if we’re good enough to accomplish a big goal.

The difference with high achievers is they embrace this problem. They’re very honest with themselves. They look at areas where they could be better. Then they address the issue. They know that simply turning a blind eye to a lack of skill won’t help them in any way.

One way they do this is by asking the following question that leads to better resilience and more determination.

“What are my 3 biggest weaknesses?”

Ask yourself this. Then be very honest. There is no need in attempting this exercise if you’re going to lie to yourself. Then take that question a step further. Ask your friends and coworkers what they believe your three biggest weaknesses are.

You need to have thick skin here. There’s a chance you could hear some things that aren’t too flattering. Be sure you let people know that you want them to be honest. They shouldn’t sugarcoat their answers. Ask a lot of people. Some of your closer friends might have biases that won’t allow them to point out your biggest flaws.

Remember, resolve means continuing to take action day after day, even when times are hard.

This means you must embrace the answers you get when this question is asked. This is especially the case when what you hear doesn’t paint the prettiest picture. The whole process of this exercise is that you identify and stop ignoring your shortcomings.
