As already noted, there are three different types of body images: negative, positive and neutral. Of the three, there are no benefits to having a negative body image. However, there are benefits to having either of the other two. Let’s look at a few of the benefits of each of the two remaining body types.

Positive Body Benefits

  • More time to socialize. One of the benefits of being positive is that you have more time to devote yourself to other things in your life because you are not always worrying about your body or what others think about it. It is what it is and you have accepted that.
  • Increased fitness. Because you are proud of your body, you are going to do what you can to take care of it and this means you eat healthy and exercise regularly to maintain a healthy weight and toned body.
  • More stable mentally and emotionally. Another benefit many people see when they have a positive body image is that their mental and emotional state are much brighter. In other words, they are happier.
  • More friends and an active social life. And happier people tend to make more friends, which in turn supports a more active social life. The circle is now complete.

Neutral Body Image Benefits

  • Healthier mental image of themselves. While they are not at the stage of positive yet, they have accepted themselves for who they are.
  • More at peace with their current body. While they may waffle between liking and disliking their body depending on the day, don’t hate their body and they do respect it as it is.
  • More time for other things. With a more neutral view of themselves, they spend less time criticizing themselves and have more time to devote to other important things in their life.
  • More self-confidence and a higher self-esteem. With less of a negative view, they find they are happier and have a higher level of self-worth. This leads to taking less risks at unhealthy behavior.

As you can see, there are several benefits to having at least a neutral body image; having a positive image is even more beneficial. Hello and welcome to our lessons on body image, and in particular, some of the signs that you may have a negative image of yourself. Over lessons in this course, we will explore these signs:
• Experiencing dissatisfaction with your weight
• Feelings of shame, anxiety or depression about your body
• Low self-confidence and low self-esteem
• Frequently comparing yourself with others
• Choosing unhealthy behaviors to change your body

Before we get into the first sign, let’s define just what a body image is. “Body image is often defined as one’s perceptions, feelings and thoughts about his or her body, and it usually incorporates body size estimation, evaluation of body attractiveness and emotions associated with their body shape and size.”

Now let’s look at a negative body image definition: “Someone with a negative body image struggles with a distorted perception of his or her shape perceiving parts of the body or the whole body unlike they really are. Often these individuals feel ashamed, self-conscious, and anxious about their body. They may feel awkward and uncomfortable in their bodies, often viewing their shape and or size as a sign of personal failure.”

Now that we have a better idea of a negative body image, let’s look at the first sign.

Experiencing dissatisfaction with your weight
Frequently a person develops a negative body image due to the perception of them seeing themselves as overweight. This is an easy trap to fall into with all the beauty and fashion ads online and in print. Most of the models are at size 0 or 2 at the most. You may be at a correct weight for your height according to the BMI chart, but someone who does not have a lot of self-confidence about themselves may view their body as overweight because they do not look like the models in the ads. Keep in mind that those models are the anomaly and not reality. Just look around you.

You will see the word “perception” used frequently throughout these lessons because it is that distorted view one has of themselves that is causing the negative body image.
