What Does Organic Mean?
Google is the largest search engine in the world. Because of this, a lot of people use it to answer questions on an endless number of topics. If you type the phrase “what does organic mean” into Google, or any other search engine for that matter, you are met with a dizzying list of results. A recent search on Big G for that phrase resulted in a mind-boggling 89 million results.
Suffice it to say that different people have different ideas of what organic means. Here are a few of the more relevant definitions concerning living an organic lifestyle as a way to limit your exposure to toxins, poisons and other harmful chemicals.
- “Related to or derived from living matter.”
- “A holistic approach to growing crops without synthetic inputs like pesticides and fertilizers.”
- “The product of a farming system which avoids the use of man-made fertilizers, pesticides, growth regulators and livestock feed additives.”
These definitions refer to the growing, harvesting and marketing of organic foods. When considering organic as a qualification for clothing, fabric, cleaning supplies and bathroom products, an absence of possibly harmful chemicals is also the focus. Think of the organic tag as applicable when the item in question is as close to its natural state as it can possibly be, with minimal or zero influence or manipulation by man.

Email #1 – Organic Living and Why It Is Right for Your Health
Hello and welcome to the series on Organic Living. Over the course of these 5 lessons, we will cover:
- What going organic means
- Benefits of going organic
- Organic beauty products
- Wise food choices to make organically
- The other side of organic living
Before we get started, let’s first define the term organic, in case we have readers that are unsure of just what it is. Organic, regarding food and farming methods, according to the Mayo Clinic “Refers to the way farmers grow and process agricultural products, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products and meat.” That “way” is producing food without the use of artificial chemical fertilizers, pesticides or other non-natural agents. In other words, food is grown in its natural state without the use of harmful chemicals. Instead natural methods are used to control pest infestation and weeds that can compete with produce and interfere with animal growth and the production of milk.
Organic food usually costs more up front than non-organic – up to 50% more. In part, the higher cost is due to three things: labor, organic certification and demand. Growing food organically requires more time which means labor costs are higher. Also to call something “organic” it requires the farmer to have their methods used certified as truly organic. That certification process is expensive which adds to the cost of the product.
And because most organic farms are smaller in size, they produce less than non-organic ones. Because there are fewer organic products, and more people competing for it, the law of supply and demand kicks in which drives the price up too.
Did you notice I said “upfront”? That is because you may pay more now for your food if it is organic, but you can avoid higher healthcare costs in the future because your risk of serious disease is reduced since you are not putting unhealthy chemicals and toxic metals in your body.
And if you are into eating clean, it is impossible to eat whole natural foods, which is the mantra of clean eating, without buying organically-produced food.
That wraps it up for this first lesson. In the next lesson, we will talk about the benefits of going organic. Be sure to read that one.

5 Tips for Living Organic on a Budget
You might think that living organic when on a budget is completely impossible. However, this simply isn’t true. You can live a very organic lifestyle without spending much extra money than you normally do. Here are some of the ways you can live organic while on a budget.
- Check out local farms
Not everybody lives within easy travelling distance of a farm, but if there is one nearby your home, check it out and see what is up for sale. Many farms have eggs and potatoes as a minimum, while other more advanced and working farms will have meat and milk for sale too.
- Grow your own
You might not have a large garden or space for a greenhouse, and it’s very rare that you’ll have a home where growing your weekly shop is possible. However, there are definitely things that you will be able to grow in the comfort of your home, such as fresh herbs or tomatoes. You can consider this option depending on how much space and time you have.
- Shop around for comparison
If you’ve only ever shopped in one supermarket, don’t be surprised if you never seem to save any money on your weekly shop. If you’re thinking about going organic, it might be time to shop around a little bit and see if there are any savings to be made elsewhere. You may be able to spread your shopping out over 2-3 different supermarkets to maximise the deals and offers available across all of them.
- Ask farmers at the local market
There are markets all over the world, and you’re unlikely to be too far away from one. If the market is only running during one day of the week, chat to the sellers there and see if you can purchase from them during other days of the week. Speak to the farmers to ask how their animals are kept if you are going to be buying any meat.
- Opt out of plastic packaging
You can save some money here, since much of the time we are paying a premium for the plastic packaging that isn’t great for our environment anyway. Wherever possible, buy loose fruit and vegetables (even if it’s not organic), and don’t use plastic bags to contain them. There are very few items that absolutely need to be contained within a plastic bag, so much of the larger fruits and vegetables can be kept loose.

5 Basic Requirements before You Start Organic Gardening
Having an organic garden with lush vegetables and fruits can be rewarding, beneficial and satisfying. However, the entire process can seem too much to bear if you’re not prepared for it.
You do not want to be in a situation where you started off all excited, but it has now become a nightmare because you just can’t deal with all the responsibilities that come with it.
In this article will look at five basic principles of organic gardening that you should be aware of before you even embark on this venture.
1. Time
Most people get excited when they think of organic gardening. The idea of cooking and/or eating your own vegetables and fruits seems so rewarding. An important point to note is that there’s a lot of time and effort that’s involved in organic gardening.
Look at your schedule and see if you have the time for it. If you’re a busy career woman or a businessman who travels often, having an organic garden may not be a good option for you, if there’s no one to tend the garden when you’re not around.
2. Knowledge
Before even planting a single seed, you should have read several books on the topic and have a rough idea of what it’s all about. This will allow you to avoid many of the common mistakes that people make.
Knowing what alternatives to use besides insecticide, how to check the pH of your soil, what are the most suitable crops to grow, etc. are just some of the things you should know.
3. Planning
Planning is probably the most crucial requirement of the lot. You must know how much space you have for your gardening and what crops you will be growing.
Is the climate suitable for what you’re growing? Is there enough space? What tools do you need?
Like Dale Carnegie once said, “An hour of planning will save you 10 hours of doing.”
4. Budget
While organic gardening is relatively inexpensive once you’re experienced, there are some initial costs that can add up when you’re first starting. You need to get tools, seeds, make your soil fertile, purchase or make your own compost and so on.
It would be a good idea to calculate just how much money you need before you get started.
5. Your Purpose
Knowing why you decided to do organic gardening will help you stay focused and consistent in the long run. Once the initial excitement is over and the daily work begins, it may seem like a chore to water the crops daily and constantly create compost for your garden.
Write down your objective and what you hope to achieve with your garden. Do you want healthier food? Do you want to save money on your groceries? Is this a hobby? Does it give you happiness?
Write it all down and frame up this little note and hang it somewhere in your garden. This will help you remember why you started if you ever feel like giving up.
Organic gardening can be a very rewarding activity that allows you to save money, eat healthier, get exercise and get in touch with nature. It doesn’t get better than that.
