How Can You Test Your Online Course Idea Before You Create It?

Many people new to the Internet marketing niche spend hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars creating an online course, just to have it flop when they try to market it. They thought they knew what the market wanted, but because they did not take the proper steps to fully test their idea first, it failed. In this series, we explore some ways to first test an idea you might have for an online course before you invest too much money or time in it.

Search Google

One of your first steps in testing a market idea is to search online to see what interest there is in your topic. But first think of a half dozen search phrases that a person searching for your topic might use if they were going to do a search. Next, type in one of your search phrases into Google and analyze at the results.

Some things you will want to look at are:

  • Did the list on page one closely match your topic?
  • Are relevant ads showing up in the search results?
  • Are any courses similar to your idea showing up in the results?

These three questions are significant because of the information you can glean from them. Take the first question for example. By your topic showing up on page one, it shows there is a significant interest in that topic. Also look at the bottom of the page for other suggested search phrases you can use.

As far as question two, if businesses are spending advertising money promoting products or services relevant to your topic, that means there is a valid market and people are most likely already buying these things.

If courses similar to your idea are showing up in page one results, it also indicates that someone has most likely went through this same test-an-idea exercise and found there was enough interest to create and sell a course. Look the courses showing up in the results. You will want to write your course a little different from the rest so that you have your own USP (Unique Selling Proposition) so that you can stand out in the crowd.

Search Amazon

Another good place to search is Amazon. Use the same search phrase and use the Look Inside feature to see a Table of Contents. Also check for comments to see what people like about it and dislike. That can give you some insight as far as what you should include in your course.

2. Create content about your course

4. Pay for advertising if you can

Naturally, #3 creates the most urgency, but can limit your long-term earnings by not letting people buy a product they’d otherwise want to purchase. That said, an offer like #3 can often earn several months of income all at once.

Another way to combine these kinds of offers is to use #3 and discontinue the product after the launch, then make it available for the general audience six months down the line.

The launch day offer is crucial, because it adds the all-important aspect of urgency. Put some time into thinking about what would really motivate your audience to act now rather than later. Ask yourself: what would motivate you, if you were in their position?
