Calming Movements

Certain exercises are associated with their success at relieving the effects of stress. Here are 5 of the better-known ones that work.

Kickboxing – This high energy exercise is great for relieving stress. Where else can you unmercifully beat up something both with your feet and hands and not get arrested. Taking your frustrations out on a boxing bag is great at relieving stress and in the process improves strength, balance, flexibility and metabolism.

Cardio – Whether going for a walk or run, using a treadmill or elliptical trainer, or another type of cardio training, exercises that use the large muscle groups are more effective at reducing stress (and burning calories).

But in today’s world while we don’t have to fight off animals anymore, our body perceives certain situations as threats and in turn releases cortisol as a response to help resolve the threats. When it becomes chronic, as it is so often in today’s world, it starts to cause problems both mentally and physically. Over the course of these 5 lessons, we will cover:

  2. Why stress is bad for you
  3. Simple hacks to overcome stress
  4. Natural essential oils that help relieve stress
  5. Using relaxation techniques

Noticing the signs of stress

We all have stress in our life – there is no escaping it. But when it becomes unmanageable, then it is time to start doing something about it. But how do you know when you have reached your limit? There are some tell-tale signs:

  • You are more irritable and short-tempered.
  • You focus more on the negative than before.
  • It is hard to relax.
  • You are sleeping a lot more or less.
  • You are eating much less or much more.
  • Your interest in sex is low.
  • You are neglecting your responsibilities.
  • You are exhibiting physical health symptoms like, headaches, nausea, dizziness, chest pain, rapid heartbeat, frequent colds, diarrhea or constipation.

  1. Essential oils

Essential oils can be used around the home, on your pillow before you sleep, or in the bath. They have many properties which have been known to reduce stress and anxiety levels, so shop around to find which scents and types you like and experiment to find something that works for you.

  1. Exercise and moving more

Exercise can help with reducing stress, but this doesn’t mean that you have to suddenly start hitting the gym every day. You can get some exercise by moving a little bit more than you normally do, such as taking the elevator up a few floors and walking the remaining flight of stairs. Alternatively you can walk to the next bus stop or ditch your car once a week in favour of cycling to work or to the shops.
