The American Sociological Review reports that more than 70% of US employees in one study found it difficult to develop a balance between work and play. In the United Kingdom, The Mental Health Foundation reports that as many as 1 in 6 UK residents will experience a serious mental health issue every week. They point to “… the pressure of an increasingly demanding work culture in the UK” as potentially the biggest influence and most concerning challenge to mental health in the United Kingdom.

In 2013, a 31-year-old Japanese journalist died after accumulating 159 overtime hours in just 30 days. She died from heart failure that labor inspectors said was caused by overworking. In 2016, a similar case involved an employee at the Dentsu advertising agency. Officials with the Japanese labor standards bureau say 24-year-old Matsuri Takahashi killed herself after posting “I want to die” and “I’m physically and mentally shattered” to her social media accounts.

Labor officials ruled that her death was caused by constant stress she experienced after consistently working long hours for a period of several months.

World-renowned video gamer Brian “Poshybrid” Vigneault regularly posted live streaming videos of himself playing the World of Tanks video game for 20+ hours without taking a break. On February 19, 2017, after an uninterrupted 22 hours live streaming his video game play, the 35-year-old gamer took a cigarette break and never returned. He was found dead. His death is being reported as related to heart health issues possibly caused by sleep deprivation.

Everywhere you look today, you see people that struggle to create a sensible work/life balance.

This doesn’t just happen overnight. At first, maybe you decide to spend a little extra time at your job or career, figuring that if you put in the extra time now it will pay off later. After a few years of doing this, you may find yourself logging crazy hours in a never-ending pursuit of some business-related goal. You figure that you have already spent so many years devoting more time to work than free time that it doesn’t make any sense to change your regular routine now.

On the other side of the coin, perhaps you adopt the attitude that there is always tomorrow. You’ll devote more time to your business, career or job in the future. None of us are guaranteed another minute on this planet, and with that mindset, you devote all your energy to working as little as possible and enjoying no-responsibility free time whenever you can. The years pass, and you end up having to work two jobs to keep up with your mounting bills, and your cherished free time has all but disappeared.

Whether you are an entrepreneur, 9-to-5 employee, business owner or freelancer, there are probably times when you struggle with balancing your work activities and personal time. This report will help you achieve the work/life balance you’ve been looking for.

You will get started by thinking about and listing your priorities, then diligently and honestly tracking everything you spend your time on each day. You will learn steps proven to help you avoid procrastination, and the smart way to set boundaries in your life so you maximize both your career and personal lives.

Welcome to the Self-Care Series

In today’s hectic world and working a demanding job, it is easy to get lost in the process and forget to take care of yourself. In this training series, we are going to explore some ways to reduce stress and get back some “me” time.

But before we do anything else, let’s first define what self-care really is: “Any intentional activity that you do that in some way contributes to your emotional, physical, mental health and well-being.” So simplistically, it is any activity that soothes and satisfies your soul.

Some people relate to it in machine terms. Every piece of machinery needs some periodic scheduled maintenance to keep it working correctly. If not, over time that piece of machinery will fail to perform its function.

You need that same type of scheduled maintenance too (or you will eventually fail) only we call it self-care.

While scheduling in time for self-care should be an obligation you should do for yourself, the types of activities you do shouldn’t be obligatory. For example, if you don’t like jogging, then it is not going to help you mentally or emotionally to go jogging. But for someone who likes to jog, they don’t feel it is an obligation, but a form of release for them. Different things work for different people. You have to find what works for you.

If you are already maxed out on time, you may have to give up something to have time to add in self-care. Do you really need to spend a half-hour a day on social media to see what others are doing? Instead, take that half-hour for yourself occasionally and spend it on self-care. In most cases, you will only have to give up a thing or two, to free up enough time for self-care.

Setting Boundaries at Work If Necessary

If you are coming home from work drained every night, or bringing work home with you, maybe it is time to set some boundaries. Sit down and look at what you must do and things you could give up. Some responsibilities maybe can be shifted to a co-worker that isn’t as overloaded as you. The important thing here is if you do not initiate a change, everything will stay the same … and you will still come home drained every night. Grab the bull by the horns and make change happen.

In the next lesson, we are going to look at how to prioritize work activities. See you then!

6 Tips for a Better Work-Life Balance

When you start a new job or if you take on some extra work, getting a good balance between working and not working can be difficult. In order to ensure that you remain healthy and happy while also working and doing well at your job, here are some tips to help you get the right balance.

1. Leave the office earlier one evening per week

If you are allowed and there is no reason why you shouldn’t, try to leave the office slightly earlier one night a week. This will allow you to catch an earlier train, beat the rush-hour traffic and get home a little bit earlier. You might need to start slightly earlier in the morning in order to have this compromise.

2. Make time for extra activities

Rather than coming home and going straight to bed, which causes you to feel like you don’t do anything other than work and sleep, plan some social activities and other things to do during the evenings or on your days off.

3. Set some short-term travel goals

Book some times off and plan your travel for the next six months or so. You might want to have a short weekend break with your partner or a friend, and you can plan a longer vacation for a couple of months in advance.

4. Meet friends for lunch

Always take your lunch break unless there is a serious reason why you can’t, and do other things besides eating lunch. Go for a mini shopping trip or meet some friends to get some food. Have a catch up and you’ll feel refreshed for the afternoon.

5. Wake up earlier

Sure, we all need our sleep, but waking up just an hour earlier will allow you to get more things done and will free up your time in the evenings. When you get back from work, it will take you longer to do things or you might not feel like doing them at all.

6. Take some time for yourself

Even if you have a large family and plenty of things to do all the time, you should find an hour or so each week to do something which is just for you and nobody else. Whether this is a meditation session, a walk to your favorite local park or a bath with a drink and some candles, make some time for you.

Work-Life Balance PLR Articles Sample:

Are You Addicted to Work?

Work addiction is just like most other addictions. It’s hard to break and you’ll need to be mindful about it at all times so that you can wean yourself off this addiction.

The good news is that unlike smoking or drug addiction, it’s easier to stop being a workaholic. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy… and in these times, with the workload and stresses that abound, Jack just might go mad if he doesn’t take a break.

The first step to understanding why you’re addicted to work will be to self-reflect on why you’re doing what you’re doing.

* Understanding your feelings

Very often, there are feelings of guilt or fear associated with working too much. You may feel guilty at not earning enough to provide for your family. Or maybe you’re working long hours just to please your boss because you fear losing your job.

If you’re an entrepreneur who works 12 to 16-hour days just to speed up the process and earn six figures a month, your lack of patience might be taking a toll on your physical and mental health.

Once you understand what’s making you work such long hours, you’ll be able to understand how to fix the root cause of the problem. In some cases, it would be a good idea to speak to a professional for guidance.

* Following a schedule

The best way to break work addiction will be to have a fixed schedule that you blindly follow. This will mean starting work at the same time every day and stopping at the same time.

Ideally, you shouldn’t be working more than 8 or 9 hours a day. You could push it up to 12 hours, but not beyond that. Even 12 hours is extreme.

If you work a day job, leave the moment work ends. Staying longer at the office is not a reflection of your dedication, but a display of your lack of productivity.

All work you need to complete for the day needs to get done within the working hours. Then it’s time for you to switch off and wind down.

You MUST be extremely strict with this routine of starting and stopping work at the same time daily.

This will help you break your addiction to work and help you to let go of the need to keep hustling and grinding to do more and more to a point where it’s a never-ending cycle.

* Increasing productivity

You can get more done in a shorter time by increasing your productivity. Very often, people spend time at the water cooler gossiping, or attending unnecessary meetings that are time wasters.

Eliminate all time-wasting activities from your work schedule. Use a pomodoro timer to keep you on track and focused. You want to be doing work that matters and not just ‘busy work’ that makes it look like you’re working – but what you’re doing is irrelevant, and you’ll need to spend more time doing the relevant work later.

* Delegating

Whatever can be automated, should be automated. Whatever can be delegated, should be delegated.
Time is your most important resource. Micromanaging and perfectionism will only stress you out. Pass off your mundane tasks to someone else if you can, and only focus on the highly important tasks that matter.

You may need to pay for software or hire help (workers, freelancers, etc.) to handle your workload. The investment will pay for itself many times over by freeing up your time so that you’re not overworked.

* Exercise

Exercise is fantastic for giving you a mental break from the stresses at work. It’ll also release dopamine in your body.

Try to end every work day with a 20-minute exercise session. It could be yoga or sprints or just some bodyweight training. These 20 minutes will help your body stretch the muscles, get the heart pumping and the blood flowing.

You’ll feel better and less stressed out. You’ll also have something to look forward to after work, provided you enjoy the activity you’re doing. So, find one that’s fun.
“Workaholics are addicted to activity; super achievers are committed to results.” – Charles Garfield
