Introduction – What is Perfectionism and What Are the Downsides?

Have you ever been called a “perfectionist”? Has anyone ever told you that your standards are too high or that you’re too hard on yourself, and maybe too hard on others?

Perfectionism is defined as a personality trait characterized by a person’s striving for flawlessness and setting high standards. It’s usually accompanied by self-criticism and a critical nature.

What does this mean and what does it look like?

Perfectionism can impact every area of a person’s life or just one area. For example, someone may be a perfectionist in their professional life, but their personal life is unaffected. Someone may be a perfectionist in their physical appearance but relaxed in other areas of their life. Why? Where does perfectionism come from?

Perfectionism can come from a number of different areas and experiences. It can come from feeling unworthy in a certain area of your life or lacking self-confidence. It can come from a lack of self-confidence or from a need to be in control. And perfectionism can arise due to a tendency to procrastinate.

Does it matter? Why is it important to overcome perfectionism?

Email #2 – How many of these signs can you identify with?

Welcome to Lesson 2. In the world of perfectionism, there are 12 generally-acceptable and definite identifiable signs that identify you as a perfectionist. And depending on how many of these signs you identify with, also your level of perfectionism. Let’s take a look at those 13 signs:

  1. No room for mistakes
  2. Specific manner in which things must be done
  3. All or nothing approach in everything you do
  4. It is all about the end result
  5. You are excessively hard on yourself
  6. You go into a depressed mood if everything doesn’t go right
  7. Your standards are higher than expected by others
  8. Success is never enough
  9. You procrastinate
  10. You are constantly on the lookout for mistakes of your own and are quick to point out the mistakes of others
  11. You expend more time than you should to get the perfection you desire
  12. You are always eager to please other people
  13. You see and do everything as black or white with no grey in it at all

How many do you identify with? Not all of these signs are necessarily bad or negative and when under control, they can even enhance one’s work. But if left unchecked and to their own accord, they can be devastating to a career, health and even relationships.

Sometimes being a perfectionist is a learned personality disorder. Many times it can come about as a result of the academics one was taught where the teacher would not accept anything less than perfect. Other times it can be from an environment at home when growing up where everything had to be exact and perfect. And because some people are more prone to perfection than others, for some people exposed to these situations it can take hold and dominate their life. New research even suggests that in some cases it can be an inherited trait.

In the next lesson we discuss some of the downsides to being a perfectionist. See you then!

How to Get More Done Even When You’re a Perfectionist

If you are a perfectionist, you may struggle to get things done because you find that you either procrastinate or you’re afraid of failing. However, there are certain things you can do which generally help to get things done and tick items off your to-do list throughout the day.

  1. Set deadlines

Giving yourself deadlines is a great way to motivate yourself using nothing other than passing time. Set realistic deadlines, however, or you will start to become demotivated when you aren’t completing it on time, or you may put yourself under too much pressure and cause other problems.

  1. Break items down

The most popular things for people to procrastinate over are those which are large and/or made up of several different parts. Rather than seeing the whole project as one huge project, break it down on your list into smaller ones. This will enable you to de-stress and tackle something which you once thought was too much for you.

  1. Try not to strive for perfection

This one might be very difficult to do, since the very definition of a perfectionist suggests it would be impossible. However, accepting that you might not always get it spot on can be a huge step forward in building your own confidence and feeling less worried about projects and tasks in the future.

  1. Learn from mistakes

If you spend hours focusing on your mistakes and feeling unable to move on from them, you’ll always struggle to properly get things done at a reasonable rate. You may find that you’re working very slowly because your mind is elsewhere, or you could become so worried about making mistakes that you start to put off tasks and avoid doing things altogether.

  1. Develop your own skills

Just because you may not be perfect at something now doesn’t mean that you can’t learn and develop. This is something which we should all try and do, and for perfectionists, there is a huge sense of achievement which comes from learning a new skill or making yourself into a better person in some aspect.

  1. Take time off

Although you might want to continue working and getting everything done (perfectly!), you should always give yourself some downtime and allow your mind and body to recover. By doing this, you’ll be able to return to your work in a better frame of mind.

The Dangers of Depression

There are definite dangers associated with depression. It can affect nearly all ages, with some groups and demographics being more susceptible than others (women are more likely to develop depression than men, for example, and teens are said to be more prone to depression than adults). Depression can even be fatal, warn medical professionals; and it’s not just the disorder that poses risks. Medications can also present their own list of risky side effects.

Here are some of the dangers commonly associated with depression.

Suicide

This may be the “ultimate” danger associated with depression – it’s considered by many to be the most extreme manifestation of the disorder. Depressed people may convince themselves that they just aren’t worth enough to live, or that their friends and family will be better off without them. Warning signs of suicide include:

* Preoccupation with death – person constantly talks about death or conducts extensive research into the afterlife, methods of suicide, and other related subjects

* Gathering belongings and giving them away

* Cleaning out and “getting things in order” for no apparent reason

* Continual speaking about death, the afterlife, or other similar things

Loss of Job and Income

Depression can be debilitating. The depressed person feels worthless and unmotivated, and may call in sick frequently or not show up for work. They may be late or be unable to face difficulties during the workday. Depression can cause a person to be indecisive and unable to concentrate, which could be extremely dangerous in certain types of work (such as construction or factory work that requires a worker to be alert to avoid injury to him/herself or others).

Losing a job may then exacerbate the person’s depression, and the loss of income could affect the amount of medical attention and medication he or she is able to afford.

Medications

While medication can save lives, it can also pose serious and/or dangerous side effects. Antidepressants tend to have fewer side effects than SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), but antidepressants may, ironically, induce suicidal thoughts.

Several years ago, a popular antidepressant was called on the carpet for indirectly causing the actual suicides of many people who took it. SSRIs may cause bad headaches, temporary or chronic diarrhea, insomnia, nausea, and/or nervousness and agitation.

Self-Neglect

Depressed people have a tendency to neglect their own health and care. They may not have the energy or focus to keep their homes clean, eat well, or care for their body. Because of this self-neglect, depressed individuals may be more susceptible to illness.

More serious illnesses may go untreated because the depressed person just can’t cope with the idea of having a serious illness and therefore he or she doesn’t seek help or treatment.

Bad Habits PLR Article Sample:

Nine Habits That Are Bad for Your Mental Health

These nine habits can cause problems that eventually affect your mental health. Being aware of them can help you check yourself regularly to ensure that you’re not experiencing negative mental health issues based on your bad habits.

  1. You Have Bad Posture – You might not think of something as physical as this to cause problems with mental health. However, if you tend to slouch and sit wrongly, your mood might go with it – especially if you tend to experience pain from your bad posture. And if you don’t now, you will as you age.
  2. You’re Prone to Perfectionism – Some people think “perfectionism” is a good quality to have but the truth is, having perfectionist tendencies is not a good thing. It can mean that you’re procrastinating more or it may mean that you are fearful of your life, including both success and failure.
  3. You Experience Guilt Easily – One of the worst emotions that you can allow yourself to have regularly is guilt. Most of the time, guilt is a useless emotion not based on real reasons to feel guilty. If you feel guilty regularly, you probably don’t feel loved or cared for, which can affect your mental health.
  4. You Don’t Exercise Regularly – Being sedentary is one of the worst habits you can have. Some studies suggest it’s worse than smoking. That’s pretty bad. If you sit more than four hours a day, you’ll need to incorporate intentional exercise to avoid problems. When you don’t move much, you may end up depressed.
  5. You Have a Negative Mindset – If you’ve allowed yourself to develop the habit of always thinking negatively about things, it’s time to turn that around. Negative thinking leads to anxiety and depression and feelings of powerlessness.
  6. You Use Social Media Too Much – Reading social media posts is a proven bad habit for your health, especially your mental health. The main reason is that people tend to share and post more negativity than positivity.
  7. You Don’t Have Downtime from Screen Time – If you transition from your work computer to your home computer to your TV, that’s way too much screen time. The light emitted from screens can interfere with your circadian rhythms, causing insomnia and daytime sleepiness.
  8. You Don’t Get Enough Sleep – If you have a habit of staying up late and not sleeping enough, you need to try to ensure that you do sleep between 7 to 10 hours a night. Everyone needs different amounts but if you’re always tired, it will affect your mental health and make it harder for you to deal with issues.
  9. You Don’t Stay Hydrated – Drinking enough water and liquids each day is an important component in ensuring good health. Many people walk around dehydrated and don’t realise it. If you are not counting your water and you feel tired, double check because it may be the water. When you feel tired, it can affect your mental health and make you foggy and unable to make good decisions.

These bad habits can lead to poor mental health due to the fact you’re not going to be operating at the top of your game. If you want to ensure your mental health remains as good as possible, try to reverse these bad habits.

Discipline VS Motivation: Which is More Important for Fitness?

This is an excellent question and there is only one answer to it – discipline. To be more specific, you need self-discipline to achieve anything worthy in fitness and in life.

So, what’s the difference between the two?

When the New Year is around the corner, being excited and motivated to make massive changes to one’s life is a very common occurrence. This is motivation from extrinsic sources.

Every single year, millions of people make resolutions to lose weight, get fit, save money, etc. That’s motivation. They are inspired and motivated by the date. The New Year feels like a new beginning. Everything seems possible.

Yet, by February, millions of people have given up on their resolutions and the year looks like it’s going to be just like any other year… at least until the next New Year when the cycle repeats itself.

So why do they quit?

The bitter truth is that if one does what they always do, they’ll be where they’ve always been. To see new results and achieve lofty goals, you’ll need to make massive changes to your life.

Unfortunately, almost all change is met with opposition. Trying to clean up your diet and lose weight? You’ll have to get used to the new nutritious foods that you’re supposed to eat. You’ll need to stop watching so much TV and go to the gym and work out.

These new changes will seem unpalatable and unpleasant. The nutritious foods will seem bland and tasteless to you. You’ll have cravings for junk food and sugary, processed foods. You’ll have to battle these temptations constantly… and that’s no fun.

You need self-discipline to stay on track… a lot of self-discipline. If you lack it, you’ll give in to temptation.

The same applies to your training. The exertion and muscular aches will make you feel weary. Many men hate cardio, but it’s important to keep your cardiovascular system strong and to boost your metabolism.

The most difficult part of a workout will be convincing yourself to go work out. Overcoming your usual state of inertia is an onerous task. Guess what you’ll need?

Yes… you’ll need self-discipline.

Once the promise of a new beginning and the festive spirit of the New Year is over, that’s when the grind begins… and motivation can die out real fast.

At times like these, self-discipline will carry you through. Like Steven Covey said, “The undisciplined are slaves to moods, appetites and passions.”

It’s imperative that you develop self-discipline. This is the key to achieving all the goals you’ve always wanted. It’s a skill that makes you almost unstoppable.

You can watch all the self-help videos and motivational speeches on the planet. You can whip yourself into a frenzy of motivation and ooh-rah the whole night. But when dawn breaks and you need to wake up early to go for a run, and you can’t do it – all that motivation will be for nothing.

If you had self-discipline, you’d grimace and get up. You’d get ready and your shoes would be strapped up. You’ll take the first step and the next and run until you’re dripping with sweat.

You may not like it, but you’ll do it… and when you’re done, you’ll take satisfaction in knowing that you kept your promises to yourself.

Self-discipline will make you respect yourself and you’ll grow as a person. You’ll start becoming the person that others look to for motivation. Your fitness levels will skyrocket from consistent effort and your body will transform before your very eyes.

Not through motivation… but through self-discipline.

“Motivation gets you going, but discipline keeps you growing.” – John C. Maxwell
