Of course, we give you several specific mindfulness meditation practices as well as mindfulness scripts. Finally we close out with a section that covers specific tools and accessories (like yoga mats and essential oils) that can help you get the most out of your mindfulness practice. Let’s define the term to get started.
What is Mindfulness Meditation?
In this chapter, we will explore the definition of mindfulness meditation and its origins. We will also discuss how it is similar to and different from other forms of meditation.
Here is a simple and straightforward definition.
Mindfulness meditation involves paying attention to the present moment, without judgment or distraction. It is a practice of being aware of your thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations in the present moment.
That’s really it! There is not some hard process to follow.
Stay in the moment with all your senses. Forget the past and don’t worry about the future. Just “BE” in the now.
An Ancient History
Meditation is a practice that has been around for thousands of years, with roots in various cultures and religions. The history of meditation is complex and varied, but it has been an integral part of many spiritual and philosophical traditions throughout the world.
One of the earliest known mentions of meditation comes from the Hindu scriptures known as the Vedas, which were written in India around 1500 BCE. The Vedas describe a form of meditation known as dhyana, which involved focusing the mind on a single point or object in order to achieve a state of deep concentration and inner peace. Dhyana was later incorporated into the practice of yoga, which became popular in India around 500 BCE.
It was around that time that the Buddha founded a new religion based on his teachings, which included a form of meditation known as vipassana, or insight meditation. Vipassana involves observing the breath and the sensations in the body in order to develop a deeper understanding of the nature of the mind and the self. Over time, vipassana became one of the core practices of Buddhism and spread throughout Asia, where it is still widely practiced today.
In the 3rd century BCE, the Indian emperor Ashoka embraced Buddhism and began promoting meditation and other Buddhist practices throughout his kingdom. This helped to spread Buddhism beyond India and into neighboring countries like Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Tibet.
Around the same time, the Chinese philosopher Laozi founded the religion of Taoism, which also placed an emphasis on meditation and the cultivation of inner peace and wisdom. Taoist meditation practices often involved visualizing symbols or images and focusing on the breath in order to quiet the mind and achieve a state of tranquility.
In 1273 Sultan Walad founded the Mevlevi Order of Sufism, a mystical branch of Islam that placed an emphasis on meditation and other spiritual practices. Sufi meditation practices often involved reciting sacred words or phrases and focusing on the breath in order to achieve a state of inner peace and connection with God.
Early in the 20th century, the Indian sage Ramana Maharshi began teaching a form of meditation known as self-inquiry, or atma vichara. Self-inquiry involved questioning the nature of the self and the source of consciousness in order to achieve a state of self-realization and liberation.
In the 1920s, the American philosopher and mystic Franklin Merrell-Wolff began teaching a form of meditation known as “consciousness-only,” which involved focusing on the nature of consciousness in order to achieve a state of spiritual awakening.
In the 1950s and ‘60s, many Americans became interested in Eastern spirituality and began traveling to India and other Asian countries to study meditation with traditional teachers. The American psychologist and writer Richard Alpert, also known as Ram Dass, was one of the most well-known figures in this movement. After studying with the Indian guru Neem Karoli Baba, Ram Dass returned to the United States and began teaching a form of meditation and spirituality that blended Eastern and Western traditions.
In the 1980s and ‘90s, the field of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) began to develop, led by the American physician and meditation teacher Jon Kabat-Zinn. MBSR involved using mindfulness meditation to help people cope with stress and chronic pain, and it has since become widely used in hospitals, clinics, and other settings.
In the 21st century, meditation has continued to grow in popularity, with many people using it as a way to reduce stress, improve mental health, and achieve spiritual growth. There are now countless books, apps, and websites dedicated to teaching meditation, and it has become a mainstream practice in many parts of the world.
As you can see, meditation has a rich and diverse history that spans thousands of years and multiple cultures and religions. It has been used as a tool for achieving inner peace, spiritual awakening, and both physical and mental health. Today, it continues to be an important practice for many people around the world, offering a way to connect with oneself and the world around us.

5 Big Ways Mindfulness Gives You a Healthier, More Fulfilling Life
Being mindful can truly transform your life. It changes your brain chemistry so you move naturally to better physical and mental wellness. Here are five big ways you can enjoy a better, more fulfilling life by being mindful.
1 – An Overall Immune System Boost
Mindfulness meditation strengthens the immune system by reducing the impact of stress on the body and promoting greater overall health and well-being. This reduces your risk of developing illnesses, diseases and infections. For a real world example, a person that practices mindfulness regularly may find they’re less likely to get sick during cold and flu season.
2 – Mindfulness as a Pain Reliever
Mindfulness meditation reduces chronic pain by promoting greater acceptance and self-awareness. Your attention is diverted away from the pain.
This can help individuals develop a greater sense of control over their pain and reduce their reliance on medication. Someone who suffers from chronic back pain may find that they are better able to manage their pain with the help of a mindfulness practice.
3 – Mindfulness for Improving Relationships
Mindfulness meditation can help make your relationships better by promoting greater empathy and understanding. You understand how other people feel, and the “why” of them feeling that way.
This can help you develop more meaningful and fulfilling relationships with others. For example, a person who practices mindfulness meditation regularly may find that they are better able to communicate effectively with their partner or resolve conflicts in a constructive manner.
It allows you to pump the brakes and calm yourself before you say or do something you will regret.
4 – Improved Sleep
A regular practice of mindfulness can improve sleep quality by promoting relaxation and reducing the impact of stress and anxiety on the body. This helps individuals fall asleep more easily, and you stay asleep for longer periods of time. When you’re mindful more regularly, you’ll see that you are able to fall asleep faster and experience fewer disruptions during the night.
