Introduction

Do you ever feel like something is holding you back from accomplishing a dream or goal that you have? That little voice in your head that makes you question what you want to do and you end up talking yourself out of doing it? And in the end, you justify why you can’t or shouldn’t do it. We do this because of our negative limiting beliefs.

Negative limiting beliefs only become limitations when we choose to follow them. What is canny is negative limiting beliefs seem so real to us that it is hard to question and not follow them; yet in most cases they are generally false. So why does our mind play these cruel tricks on us?

It happens at the subconscious level and many times comes from what we have been taught by our parents, teachers or others, or due to something we experienced in our childhood. But what we believe to be true and what is reality in many cases are two very different and separate things. The purpose of this book is to help you separate the two – fact from fiction.

In this book we are going to delve into limiting beliefs and in particular:

  • What are limiting beliefs and where do they come from?
  • The power of limiting beliefs – both positive and negative
  • How to recognize our limiting beliefs
  • Techniques to change negative limiting beliefs to positive ones
  • Examples of limiting beliefs

Email #5 – Worry or rumination?

Well this is it – the last lesson in this series and one where we talk about two other negative thought patterns: worry and rumination. But before we continue, it is necessary to defined what each term means.

Worry is having recurring thoughts about something in the future that you think will be bad for you. Rumination on the other hand is having negative thoughts about something that has happened to you in the past. Now with both terms defined, let’s continue.

Both worry and rumination are both thought to be symptoms of a mental disorder called anxiety. A person may exhibit either one of both types of negative thinking.

Like with all negative thinking, thoughts only become a problem when we believe them to be true. But with anxiety, the more people try to not worry or ruminate, the more they do! So, it is best to not dwell on negative thoughts, but to let them flow through your mind … but not react to them. In other words, in the case of rumination, let the excess mental baggage go. What is in the past is done and there is nothing you can do to change it, so why waste time thinking about it.

As far a worrying, what is going to happen is going to happen. In many cases, you have no control over it, so there is nothing you can do about it. For example, if you have a fear of flying, you most likely worry that if you fly, the plane will crash. But if you look at the statistics, flying is much safer than driving a car.

So statistically, you should worry more about getting into an accident every time you drive … but you don’t. Why?

Because you don’t have control over flying but do over driving a car … even though statistically you are more likely to be in an accident while driving than flying. In this case your worrying is a negative thought pattern focused on the wrong method of transportation.

Worrying and rumination can severely impact your life by holding you back from doing things that you may want to do. Like with many negative thought patterns, the only way to put the thought pattern to rest is to refute it and test it out. In our example, it would be to take a plane trip. Once you see how safe it really is, that negative thought pattern will disappear.

We’ll that’s it. I hope you have enjoyed it as much as I have and maybe even learned something along the way about spotting negative thought patterns and how to change them. Until next time!

How Do You Overcome Limiting Beliefs?

Once you’ve established that you have limiting beliefs which are stopping you from achieving what you want, you can start to take steps to overcome them. It’s not easy and quick to overcome limiting beliefs, particularly if it’s something you’ve been believing for as long as you can remember. Changing something around so drastically requires time and effort, but with the right mindset and support, there’s nothing to stop you.

Try to decide why you believe it

People have limiting beliefs without even realizing why or where they have come from. A lot of the time, limiting beliefs have been created as a person has been growing up – their parents have reinforced an idea enough times that it has remained in the person’s mind for their entire life without question. If you can try to understand why you believe something, that’s a good first step. You might then realize that you have no idea why you believe it and you shouldn’t believe it at all!

Realize that your beliefs are not you

Just because you’ve ended up believing something doesn’t mean that this is it forever now. You can change your beliefs at any point, so if you’re worried about backtracking, you have every right to do so. Developing as a person is just as much about growing and learning as it is about developing your beliefs and opinions, and if these change over time, that can be a good thing.

Differentiate between your beliefs and how you identify

Just because you don’t want to be something doesn’t mean that you can’t do it. It also doesn’t mean that you have to do it, but if you find yourself making excuse based on the fact that you just don’t think you can do something, this can be an example of a limiting belief.

It’s much more honest and upfront with yourself and others to say that you don’t want to do something, rather than that you can’t do it. Believing and saying that you can’t do something is constantly reinforcing to yourself that there are plenty of things you can’t do and you’re not as good as somebody else who can do it.

Do something different

To break out of the cycle of your limiting beliefs, do something different one day. Push yourself past the boundaries and out of your comfort zone. You never know what might happen.

Common Goal Setting Obstacles and How to Maneuver around Them

Many people have issues with goal setting due to setting limiting obstacles in their own way. Some of the most common barriers to goals setting involve fear and lack of belief in yourself enough to even set a goal, much less follow steps toward achieving them. Perhaps if you know some of the most common goal setting obstacles you can work toward overcoming them.

You Don’t Want What You Think You Want

Some goals are set because other people want them for you. If you don’t really want what you say you want, it will be very difficult to set a goal for that thing. Be sure that you’ve set the goals for the right reasons and that it’s something you really want. Write down the pros and cons of any goal and know why you want to achieve that result before setting it in stone.

You Don’t Truly Understand the Importance of Goal Setting

Many people think goal setting is just hocus pocus and doesn’t really work. If you don’t really understand the power behind appropriate goal setting, it can be hard to take the time out of your day to truly set a goal. To understand the importance of goal setting, read several books about success and you’ll find that the most successful people set realistic goals, and then worked that goal into their schedule every single day. Even people who experience “overnight success” didn’t really achieve everything overnight. It was many nights of following a plan that brought results.

You’re Not Really Sure How to Set a Reasonable Goal

If you’ve actually tried to set a goal before but didn’t experience results, it’s probably because you just don’t know how to set a goal. It’s not as easy as just writing down a dream. Goals aren’t dreams. They are realistic, specific, achievable end results that you want to see. Take the time to learn the best goal setting techniques in order to experience goal setting success.

You’re Scared of Failure

Many people do not bother setting goals because they have a self-limiting belief that they’ll fail anyway. Therefore, if they do not set a goal, they won’t have to be a failure. But remember that the idea of planning to succeed over planning to fail is realistic. No goal setting is a recipe for failure; goal setting is a recipe for success. When you accept that you can only achieve real success through goal setting, you’ll overcome this obstacle.

You’re Afraid of Judgment

Sometimes people are scared to set a goal for something because they see it as outrageous. For instance, let’s say that you want to go back to college to get a Master’s degree, or you want to start your own business. You fear that if you set that goal, and other people know about the goal they’ll judge you harshly for wanting it or for some other imagined issue. If you are worried about what others think of you, it’s time to dig deep inside yourself and get over it. The truth is, what you think of yourself is more important than anything else. When you stop judging yourself, you’ll stop worrying about the judgment of others.

You’re Afraid of Success

Believe it or not, some people are literally afraid of success. They feel too much pressure surrounding success to actually make goals to be successful. They are more comfortable in their role as someone who is not successful or who is “normal” instead of as someone who sets a goal, works toward achieving it, and is seen as a success. The truth is, there will always be people who want to tear you down once you achieve some success, but the saddest thing in life is regretting not doing something. Most people regret the things they did not do, more than the things they did do – right or wrong.

You Secretly Don’t Think You’re Worth It

This is where the way you see yourself is important because if you see yourself as someone who doesn’t follow through, who doesn’t succeed and who can’t change their life, you’ll avoid goal setting like the plague. You’re the only person on Earth who can control your actions, so you’re the only one who can set the goals for you, and the only one who can make yourself feel worthwhile.

You Don’t Really Believe It’s Possible

People avoid goal setting because they simply do not see the vision of what can be. They don’t believe. They don’t picture themselves fully at the point of success, experiencing success. Since they think it can’t happen, they don’t try. But, the truth is, you can’t know for sure about anything unless you follow the steps necessary to reach a goal. You can dream big, and reach for the stars. Trying is more important in most circles than actually making it. And, chances are that if you really try, you will make it after all.

Goal setting is an imperative if you want to truly see all your dreams and visions come to fruition. It doesn’t matter if it’s business oriented or personal – setting a realistic and achievable goal, and then working toward realizing that goal on a daily basis does work. You just have to do the work.

How Journaling Can Help with Mental Health Issues

Keeping any type of journal will help with improving any mental health issues. However, if you really want to tackle a specific problem you’re having, it will help to determine the right type of journal to keep. Keeping a particular kind of journal may work best for your issue.

* Boosts Your Mood – If you really want to boost your mood, keeping a gratitude journal is where it’s at. All you have to do is once a day, preferably before bed, write down what you’re grateful for today. It might not seem like much but it’s very powerful for going to sleep, thinking positively about your life.

* Increases Your Sense of Well-Being – As you write out your thoughts, you’ll start seeing issues from a new angle just because you’re opening your mind to think about it. This is going to make you feel more capable of dealing with whatever happens.

* Lessens Symptoms of Depression – Understand that depression is something different from sadness, and that you likely need a counselor. Writing it all down can make it seem less horrific so that you can feel better. Plus, you can look back at days you thought life was “over” and see better days after.

* Reduces Anxiety – The problem with anxiety is that it was designed to help us get away from immediate danger. It triggers the “fight or flight” response. If each time you have that anxious feeling you choose to write in your journal how you are feeling and why, you’ll start to control it better.

* Lowers Avoidance Behaviors – Many people who have mental health issues practice avoidance behaviors such as not going to places that cause them anxiety, or not doing the things they need to do due to how they feel. When you write it out, it helps you get the feelings out but do the thing anyway.

* You’ll Sleep Better – Pouring your heart out into a journal is a great way to get things off your chest. However, for sleep, go to the gratitude journal and write down what you’re thankful for today and go to sleep thinking of that.

* Makes You a Kinder Person – Exploring your own emotional state and accepting your own feelings while you work through what makes you who you are in your journal is going to make you naturally more empathetic to others too. Letting go of judgment for self improves your thoughts for others also.

* Improves Your Memory – This is almost a situation where you want to say “duh” but it has to be said. Writing down things helps you remember them because you can go back and read it, but also because the act of writing something down enables you to recall it.

One thing that can really help you make your journaling work is to learn how to keep one effectively. Make some journaling rules, do it every day to create a habit, and keep it private unless you decide to let your therapist see it or you decide to use it to help others. This is for you and only you for the most part.
