Background of Essential Oils

Essential oils today are still used to medicinally treat various medical conditions naturally. They are used extensively because of their well-known anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antiviral properties.

And since they come from plants grown naturally in the ground and not manufactured in a lab, most when used properly, do not have the bad side effects that many of the modern medicines can produce. Many times the side effects of modern medicines are worse than the condition they are trying to treat.

The eight compounds found in in essential oils: alcohols, acids, aldehydes, ketones, esters, phenols, sesqui turpines, and turpines are produced from the petal, root, rind, leaf or bark of specific plants. These oils are extracted from the above named parts of a plant through a distillation рrосеѕѕ using water or steam.

The resulting essential oils are usually clear in appearance, although some may have an amber tint. Mоѕt еѕѕеntiаl оilѕ аrе stored in dark glаѕѕ bottles аnd in many cases even in tеmреrаturе controlled environments tо рrоtесt the oils frоm sunlight and tеmреrаturе changes that will аdvеrѕеlу аffесt thеir quality and ultimately their effectiveness. In their purest form, essential oils are extremely concentrated, and generally not safe for human use before undergoing a dilution process that normally involves mixing an essential oil with a “carrier oil” before using. More on how to do that later in this book.

Essential oils are faster acting  than many of the modern medicines; some of them can enter the bloodstream and penetrate cell membranes within 30 seconds of application.

Email #1 – Welcome to the 5 Benefits of Essential Oils

Hello, I’m glad you decided to join us. It is going to be both a fun and informative ecourse that I know you will enjoy. Over the course of these lessons, we will cover some of the benefits you can reap from using essential oils, how to choose the right oils and a few popular recipes for you to try. But first, let’s look at the history behind essential oil and their use.

While the popularity of essential oils continues to increase, they are far from new. The use of essential oils dates back 4,500 years ago to the Egyptians.  They specifically cultivated plants just for the oil that they could distill and use as essential oil. Not only did they use essential oils for medicinal and cosmetic purposes, they also were the first to use them in the embalming of their dead.

Later on, the Chinese and East Indian cultures jumped bandwagon and essential oils became deeply rooted into each of those cultures’ medicine. Over in Europe, the Greeks, including “the father of medicine” Hippocrates, used essential oils as part of their medical treatment of patients.

The recent rebirth of essential oil use today is a result of people looking for ways to treat certain conditions without resorting to modern medicine, which tends to treat symptoms and not the root cause of the source.

Even the modern medical world is starting to pay attention to the benefits of essential oils as some doctors are using them as part of an integrative medical treatment plan – a combination of traditional and modern medicine.

That wraps it up for this first lesson. In the next lesson, we will talk about four considerations when thinking about starting the use of essential oils when compared to modern pharmaceuticals. Be sure to read that one.

3 Uses for Essential Oils

Even if you’ve never gone out shopping specifically for essential oils, it’s likely that you’ve seen them around and know a little bit about the benefits of them. As well as being beneficial in many ways, essential oils have various uses which make them a staple item in many households. Here are just some of the ways you can use essential oils for your health, your home and relaxation.

  1. Essential oils can help with nausea

Oils such as peppermint oil have been hailed as an aid for people suffering from nausea and sickness. During pregnancy, women often report that peppermint oil helps to relieve morning sickness. You can use it in this way either by rubbing it on the soles of your feet, diluted with another oil such as coconut oil, or by putting some in a diffuser to inhale the scent.

  1. Getting rid of bad smells

A drop or two of your favorite essential oil can help to remove bad odors, such as the smell in your shoes after a few days or to bring your bedding back to life. You can make your own mini scented cushions by filling a sock with baking soda and adding 2-3 drops of essential oil. Put this into your drawers, inside your shoes or anywhere else you want to add a relaxing and pleasant scent.

  1. Relieving muscle stress and tension

Whether you’ve been spending too much time in the gym or you wake up one morning with sore joints from your mattress, essential oils can help you to relax and relieve the tension you’re feeling. You can use them in different ways when it comes to your body and relaxing your muscles. Dilute a couple of drops of your favorite essential oil into a carrier oil such as coconut oil, mix it together and gently rub into the affected area. You can also use it to give yourself or somebody else a deeper massage.

Another way you can use essential oils to help relieve muscle tension is by mixing 5-10 drops into some bath salts. Mix together and sprinkle into a warm bath. Relax with a candle, or some essential oils in a diffuser, to feel your body de-stress and relieve the tension.

It’s clear to see that there are many uses for essential oils, making them a very versatile and popular product. Read reviews on specific oils to find out which ones could work for you.

Top 8 Essential Oils to Keep At Home

Top 8 Essential Oils to Always Keep At Home Bonus Article Sample:

Introduction

Exactly what are essential oils, and why should you be keeping them in your home? It can be argued that for oils to be considered essential, the framework or environment of discussion needs to be considered. For instance, motor oil and transmission fluid are definitely essential for your vehicle to perform properly. So with this in mind, let’s define essential oils as they relate to your physical health and well-being.

Knocking down an exact definition for essential oils depends on who you consult. Oxford Dictionaries defines an essential oil as …

“a natural oil typically obtained by distillation and having the characteristic fragrance of the plant or other source from which it is extracted.”

For our purposes, a more relative definition is offered by the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA). They refer to essential oils as coming from the “life force force or spirit” of a plant. They contain the quintessential basis of that plant, and are “physical in nature”. Also, to be considered a true essential oil, distillation by steam, water or cold pressing are the only accepted forms of extracting these beneficial oils from nature.

Essential oils can be used in a number of aromatherapy applications. Simply smelling the scent of these natural oils delivers multiple mental and even physical benefits. In some situations, essential oils are digestive. They can also be applied to your skin for treatment and absorption into your body. (It is important to note that both definitions include a form of the word “nature”)
