Hello and welcome to the series on how to be a better listener. Over the course of this and the next 4 lessons, we will cover:

O.K., let’s get started!

The Greek philosopher Epictetus (55 – 135 AD) once said, “Nature gave us one tongue and two ears so we could hear twice as much as we speak”. And more recently Larry King said “I remind myself every morning: Nothing I say this day will teach me anything. So if I’m going to learn, I must do it by listening.” Even though both quotes are eons apart, the importance of listening has not changed throughout the years.

Yet some people are so enamored with themselves that they talk more and listen less than they should. Being a good listener is an art and like most art, can be learned and further cultivated. But why is being a good listener important?

Take relationships for example. If one person does most of the talking and the other one most of the listening, what kind of a relationship exists where the person that one person must listen and rarely gets their voice heard on the topic. Having a good relationship is a back and forth mutual exchange where each party gets equal time to both talk and listen to each other.

And being a good listener is not limited to only vocal communications. Think about social media for a bit. If one person always posts messages to social media, but never responds back to messages send to them, then they are not visually listening either.

From the practical side, if we don’t visually or vocally listen to instructions, we will not do well from an academic or professional standpoint. Because study after study has shown that as people we can’t multi-task; when we are talking, we are not hearing what is being said around us.

O.K., I think that is enough for this lesson. Think about the content in this lesson and see how it applies to you. Think about how you can change your listening habits to improve your relationships socially, academically and professionally for the better.

Making a first impression is very important in a variety of situations, including at work, during meetings and when being introduced to new family members or in-laws. The impression you make when you first meet somebody will stay with them forever – especially if it’s particularly good or bad. Let’s consider some of the different ways that you can leave a great first impression whenever you meet somebody.

Make eye contact and smile

This is a standard way to make anybody feel like you’re happy to meet them. People who quickly glance over at another person and say a quick hello will always be remembered as somebody who doesn’t have a lot of time for other people. Make eye contact and smile as an absolute minimum in any social or professional situation when meeting somebody.

Remember a person’s name

Another common problem when meeting people for the first time is forgetting their name. It’s easily forgivable if you’re in a situation where you’re meeting several people at once for the first time, but if you’re only meeting one person, it doesn’t look great if you can’t remember their name later in the conversation or the next time you meet them. It can be difficult since nerves can get in the way when meeting new people and you might be concentrating on smiling, good body language and maintaining eye contact, but try to make a mental note of their name for next time.

Show an interest in them

If you’re introduced to somebody and the conversation starts flowing between you, don’t forget to show an interest in them while also talking about yourself. Nobody likes a person who can’t stop talking about themselves and everything they have achieved, so don’t forget to bear in mind that you could be boring the recipient of your conversation. Ask about their interests, why they are there, what made them choose their career, how they are finding the party, and whether they are there alone or with others.

Show off your personality

This can be tricky in some circumstances, for example, if you are meeting a professional senior person or meeting somebody in a difficult situation, but don’t forget that you’re entitled to let your personality shine through. Whether this is making a joke or dropping in a couple of references to your interests and passions, you’re much more likely to leave a good impression this way.

Whatever the situation, it’s vitally important to diffuse the discord as quickly as possible. It’s no secret that a stressful work environment is an unproductive one. Keep reading to learn more about maintaining harmony on the job. It can be done.

Take a Deep Breath

When people get angry, they tend to say things that only make the problem worse. If you ever feel yourself starting to get frustrated at work, take a deep breath and count to three. It may not seem like much, but it can be enough time to regain your focus in order to keep your composure. If you’re talking to a co-worker and feel yourself starting to get upset, consider asking that person if he or she can come back and talk to you at a later time when you feel better.

Focus on the Issue

If you are having a hard time getting along with someone at work, it can really make it difficult to interact together effectively. In this case, it’s important to only focus on the job-related issues you have with this individual and not the dislike you may have with them as a person.

Remember, lashing out at your co-workers can create more problems and make getting along with them extremely difficult. This can lead to an increase in the anger and anxiety levels of everyone involved.

Express Yourself Clearly

It can be very frustrating when it seems that the people around you don’t get what you’re trying to say. Typically, when you get angry, it becomes somewhat difficult to express yourself in a way that everyone understands. For best results, always make sure to speak calmly and clearly. Express your side of the issue without being defensive or placing blame.

Know Your Limits

Do you find yourself getting angry often? If so, it’s important to identify what sort of things set you off and also be able to recognize when you’re starting to feel upset. When you’re quick to anger, you might find yourself in an argument before you know it. So, recognizing the fact that your behavior is starting to get aggressive makes it easier to calm down and focus on solving the issue at hand.

Remove Yourself from the Situation

If your job presents you with a situation you feel you can’t handle, do whatever you can to get yourself out of the situation as calmly and quickly as possible. Politely ask the individual you’re dealing with if he or she can wait a few moments while you find someone else to assist them. This is a much better alternative to having an outburst in front of co-workers or customers. You’ll usually find it much easier to calm down once you’ve taken yourself away from whatever it is that is stressing you out.

Dealing with anger at work is never a pleasant experience. However, armed with this information, it should make difficult instances a little bit easier on everyone concerned.
