Day 1 – Get to Know Your Health Numbers … Even if You Feel Great

The most common symptom of high blood pressure is death. It isn’t discovered because the unfortunate victim hadn’t had a check-up in a while.

There are 84 million Americans that are prediabetic … and 75 million don’t know. More than 7 million others have diabetes and are unaware of their condition. A million UK adults are diabetic and have no clue because they haven’t been diagnosed.

Most US adults worry about the possibility of dying from heart disease. Yet many don’t understand their health numbers that are related to heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular disease.

The point here is you don’t know what problems you may have unless you go get those and other health metrics measured.

Your first homework assignment in your 30-Day wellness challenge is to call your doctor. Set up an appointment for a health checkup. Tell him you need a Wellness Exam because you want to take steps to become healthier. Even if you feel healthy, there can be things going on inside your body that need to be addressed before they cause irreparable harm.

Day 2 – Eat Vegetables at 2 Meals Every Day

Most people don’t eat enough vegetables these days. That’s because as much as 75% of all the food sold in supermarkets is highly processed. Even if vegetables are present, they have been drowned in preservatives, sugar, chemicals and other ingredients that render them ineffective. The wonderful nutrition they naturally have has been stripped from processed vegetables so you aren’t getting much of a health boost.

The many benefits of a health-based diet are not argued. The more raw and minimally processed, minimally cooked vegetables you eat, the healthier you are going to be. That’s the plain and simple truth.

Today’s wellness challenge practice is to start eating fresh vegetables during at least 2 of your meals each day. This is a simple health booster that improves your mental and physical well-being from head to toe.

Day 3 – Stand up After 20 Minutes of Sitting Down

You may have heard that sitting is the new smoking. There is a lot of research which indicates that if you sit too frequently, it can be as debilitating to your health as smoking regularly. (Some health professionals say it’s even worse.)

The problem isn’t so much sitting as it is being inactive.

You shouldn’t sit for extended periods of time. Whenever you have been sitting down for 20 minutes, stand up. Get moving. Do some deep knee bends. Walk to a coworker’s cubicle instead of shooting out an email. Start moving in some way.

Sitting can be deadly, raising your risk of developing chronic disease. Sit less and move more, standing up and getting active after sitting down for 20 minutes or more.

  1. Learn how to manage your time

However, managing your time is a very important part of life, especially if you have multiple things happening at the same time or within a short timeframe. As well as holding down your job and earning a living, you need to look after your home, pay the bills, and find time for yourself to relax. Use sticky notes, diaries, calendars, notebooks, and time management apps on your phone to help keep your schedule in order and avoid wasting time on unnecessary things.

  1. Drink more water

It seems so simple, yet many people struggle to drink enough water most of the time. The temptation to drink caffeinated drinks, such as coffee, is often a problem which keeps people away from more hydrating drinks like milk, fruit juice and, of course, water. If you don’t usually drink a lot of water, set yourself a low target at first. Try to drink just 500ml of water each day. Start by drinking one glass of water in the morning and one glass at lunch time. Set a reminder on your phone during periods when you think you might get carried away with work or other projects.

  1. Exercise every day

You don’t have to do the same workout every single day, but make a point of moving your body every day. You can work out more intensely on some days, and let your body wind down on others. Some days you can do a strength training workout, and other days you can do cardio. Whatever works for you is the best way to cultivate and maintain a healthier lifestyle. Start small – go for a short walk every day after work. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. If you’re sitting in front of the TV, get up every 30 minutes and walk around your house.

  1. Have some quiet time

Cultivating a healthier lifestyle isn’t all about eating the right foods and drinking more water. It’s also about giving your mind the time and space it needs to wind down. Looking after your mental health is a huge part of cultivating a healthier lifestyle – it’s just as important as looking after your physical health. Set yourself aside some time at least once a week to meditate, spend some time on your own and reflect on the things that make you feel happy and peaceful.

  1. Sleep well

Not getting enough sleep, or not getting enough quality sleep, can be detrimental to your health. Not only does a lack of sleep have knock-on effects, such as making you feel more hungry, more anxious or more depressed, but it can also cause your body to become weaker and more fatigued over time. It can disrupt your hormones, including cortisol, the stress hormone – making you feel more stressed and anxious throughout the day. If there is anything in your life which is causing you to struggle falling asleep or staying asleep, try to address it. You don’t have to be diagnosed with a problem in order to see a therapist. Repeat until you feel the stress signs disappear and you feel more calm and in control of your emotions.

#2 Gratitude

During difficult times it helps to count your blessings. Many significant studies have shown that gratitude helps a person feel more joyful and happy. It puts things into perspective and helps you feel more optimistic and resilient. When you’re grateful for what you have, the challenges of life don’t feel quite so powerful or overwhelming. If you’re having a bad moment, or dealing with something that’s stressing you out, try counting your blessings.

#3 Self-Massage
