As we age, we are less capable of both producing and absorbing nutrients that we need to slow down the effects of aging. No longer can we expect to get everything we need from eating good nutritious food alone. We require these herbs, vitamins and supplements to make up the difference:

Vitamin A – Fat-soluble, this powerful antioxidant fights off free radicals which can damage cells and shorten telemores which are measuring sticks in the DNA used to gauge real age. There are several sources of this vitamin including fish oils, dairy products, certain fruits like apricots, apples and bananas and vegetables including avocados, broccoli, carrots and cucumbers.

Vitamin C – This vitamin is water-soluble and also helps fight free-radical damage along with stimulating the production of collagen which of course helps keep skin tighter and younger looking. But keeping skin looking good is not the only thing collagen does. It also helps strengthen ligaments, prevent joint pain, keeps vertebral discs in the back flexible and strengthens bones, teeth and capillary walls – all by getting an adequate amount of vitamin C. And being it is water-soluble, you don’t have to worry about getting too much. The excess will flush out of your body as urine. One of the best sources of this vitamin of course are citrus fruits.

Vitamin D – Another fat-soluble vitamin, this one helps regulate cell proliferation and minimizes cell death – something called apoptosis. While this vitamin is made naturally through exposure to the sun, many people are still deficient, especially the elderly that may not get out in the sun as much as they should. Get extra vitamin D either through supplementation or from foods like cheese, fatty fish and egg yolks.

Vitamin E – Also fat-soluble, this one help with hormone regulation, along with being an antioxidant. Our body has several different hormones that control various functions within the body. As an anti-oxidant it helps protect cell membranes and prevents damage to enzymes and the oxidation of lipids within our cells, thus helping keep cells including skin, healthy. Foods high in vitamin E include sunflower oil, grains, oats, nuts and dairy products.

Selenium – As a mineral supplement, it preserves skin elasticity and slows down aging caused from hardening of skin tissue caused by oxidation. Good selenium sources include whole grain cereals, seafood and eggs.

Basil – As a topical application, when 1 cup of leaves are mixed with 1 tablespoon of gram flour and 1 teaspoon of honey, it helps preserve elasticity in the skin, minimizes sun damage and retains moisture in the skin.

Cinnamon – It prevents collagen breakdown by boosting collagen production. It is commonly used as a natural face mask by mixing 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder with 1 tablespoon of honey. Leave the paste mixture on for 10 minutes, wash off with lukewarm water and pat dry.

Rosemary – This herb is well-known to help prevent skin damage due to excessive sun exposure. Mix together 2 cups of water, 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary and 3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. Bring to a boil on medium heat until well mixed, simmer until the liquid quantity is reduced in half and let it cool. Once cool, strain off the liquid and use it liberally as a skin toner.

Ginger – This herb has been used by the Chinese for thousands of years and it still works today as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory for your skin. Mix 2 tablespoons of olive oil with 4 tablespoons of brown sugar and 1 tablespoon of grated ginger. Mix all ingredients together and after washing your face with a mild natural cleanser, apply it as a scrub. Work the mixture around on your face as you would any scrub for 10 minutes. Leave it on for an additional 10 minutes and then wash off with lukewarm water and pat dry.

Overview of aging

Many of us are aware of the common signs of aging on the outside – wrinkles and gray hair – but there are also things going on in the inside that you may not realize.

Cardiovascular system – As we get older, our blood vessels and arteries start to stiffen up. This makes it harder for the heart to push blood out to the outer extremities and can result in an increase of blood pressure. While medication can help control this condition, exercising helps too and doesn’t have the unwanted side effects that some medications have.

Skeleton – Bones shrink and lose density which can result in osteoporosis and an increased risk of bone breakage. Muscles lose their flexibility, strength and endurance, which leads to a loss of coordination, stability and balance.

Digestive issues – Changes in the large intestines can result in more constipation in older adults. Couple this with dehydration, a low-fiber diet and medication, and increase in constipation is a real, but unwanted sign of aging.

Urinary tract – A weakening of the bladder muscles and a loss of bladder elasticity means going to the bathroom more often. In men, an enlarged prostrate can result in difficulty emptying the bladder and even incontinence. In women a weakening of the pelvic floor and result in bladder leakage.

Memory – As your brain ages, you may begin to forget things like names or misplace things like your car keys.

Ears – Aging takes its toll on this sense. Noise over the years has dulled your hearing and you may not hear certain frequencies as well as before.

Weight – Because your metabolism is slowing down, often people gain weight as they age.

Sex – Between biological changes, illness and the side effects from medication, sex might not be as enjoyable as it once was.

While all of that may sound depressing, they are all natural signs of aging. Our purpose with this series is to make you aware of what you can do to delay these changes by living a healthy lifestyle.
