What Is a Ketogenic Dietary Approach to Nutrition?

Some diet plans explain in their name exactly what you are going to be eating. In the 1970s and ’80s, the grapefruit diet was popular. It doesn’t take deductive powers of reasoning on the scale of Sherlock Holmes to understand that approach to nutrition was going to have you eating lots of grapefruits. Other dietary plans are not as revealing. Such is the case with the ketogenic diet.

If the word ketogenic sounds technical and science-based, there is a very good reason for that. This approach to eating is taken in an effort to get your body into a state of ketosis, a scientific term which describes a type of fat-burning instead of carb-burning for energy.

By consuming dramatically fewer carbohydrates, you enter a natural state where your body produces more ketones. Since carbohydrates, a principal form of injury for human beings, are restricted, your body begins to produce ketones as an alternative energy source. You do this by eating fewer carbs and more good, healthy sources of fat.

In ketosis, your body realizes that its favorite energy source, carbohydrates, are no longer available in large supply. Your brain then gives your liver marching orders, telling it to begin producing ketones to be used for energy. You change the types of calories you put into your body. Simple carbohydrates are restricted or eliminated, and healthier forms of carbs, protein and good fats are chosen instead.

Hello and welcome to the Keto Diet. As you may or may not know, the Keto Diet is all the rage right now. As a matter-of-fact, it has been (and still is) the diet of choice among many celebrities.

Most likely you are here because you have heard of the keto diet but would like to know more about it. At the most basic level, people on the keto diet lose weight by forcing their body to use body fat as energy through a process called ketosis, instead of the more common glucose it normally uses for energy.

Glucose is made from carbohydrates (both simple and complex) that we eat and because we want our body to use ketones instead of glucose, the keto diet is low in carbs and high in fat. We’ll talk how low and the number of grams you should be eating per day in a future lesson. But first, let’s look at why this combination works so well when trying to lose weight.

When you eat carbs, the body breaks down the carbs into glucose and it enters the bloodstream. Because glucose is sugar, your blood sugar level increases. As a response to get your blood sugar down, the hormone insulin is released into your bloodstream. Insulin helps get the glucose into the cells where they can convert it into energy. But the presence of insulin inhibits the production of ketones. So by lowering our carb intake, our insulin levels are lower and the body can then use ketones as fuel for energy. And the ketones come from our liver breaking down the fatty acids in bodyfat.

So where does the fat come from in our diet? It seems counterproductive that to lose bodyfat you must consume fat from your food. But here is how that works. If the body does not get enough food, it goes into what is known as “starvation mode” where is doesn’t want to get rid of fat as it thinks it may need it for energy later on. But by getting fat from eating protein, it senses there is enough food it can use for energy, so it is more willing to also use bodyfat to make up the difference of what it needs to function. However, if you eat too much protein, it can also spike your blood sugar, which releases insulin and we know that is not good when trying to lose weight. So the trick with fats, is to eat just enough protein to satisfy your body needs without spiking your insulin levels.

Limiting carbs is definitely an effective way to lose weight because it makes your body enter a state of ketosis where it goes from carb-burning to fat-burning. This means your body will go from using the carbs you eat as its primary fuel source to using the fat you have stored as its primary fuel source. In time, you will see faster and more consistent fat loss thanks to this switch. But, it won’t come without sacrifice.

Simply cutting carbs is not enough to healthily lose weight on the ketogenic diet. While it’s the big first step, you also need to make sure you balance your fat and protein intake. Many people go onto the ketogenic diet and end up eating far too much protein from meat sources. Or, they end up over eating dairy products like milk and cheese. Overeating any one part of the food pyramid will lead to nutritional deficiencies, so it’s important that you find a balance in your diet.

The primary disadvantage of the ketogenic diet is that it causes you to cut out most if not all of the fruits you eat. This can lead to people eating even less healthily, especially if you aren’t a huge fan of vegetables. So, the secret to losing weight with keto isn’t just cutting carbs. It’s finding a balance between fat and protein, and making sure you still get plenty of natural foods. Opt for green foods and try to stay away from unhealthy and unnatural fat sources as well.

If you follow all of this advice and keep your eye on the biggest picture, you can definitely see success on the ketogenic diet.

No matter what your transition plan is, implement it slowly so that you fix any problems that arise.  You will want to carefully monitor your weight during the transition period so that you can see how the changes you make affect your weight.
