Introduction

What does courage really mean? According to one source, courage is” the ability to do something that frightens one.” Another source defines courage as “having strength in the face of pain or grief.”

Simplified, we can say that courage is the ability to act on one’s belief despite real or perceived danger or the disapproval from friends, family or co-workers. Other words for courage include daring, audacity, boldness, true grit, heroism and gallantry. While many of these terms conjure up scenes from a battlefield, they all apply to most situations where these attributes are needed, from the boardroom to the bedroom and everywhere in between.

Admitting that you’re scared

Many people are afraid to admit they are scared because they think they might be viewed as being weak. However, quite the opposite is true. By admitting to yourself or to others around you that you are scared is one of the first steps to pushing yourself out of your zone of comfort. By forcing yourself to go into an area (physical or emotional) that you are scared to enter, you come out on the other side a stronger person. Once you overcome that first fear, it is much easier to overcome the next one, and the next, and the …. And admitting that we are scared does another thing for us – it brings up our level of awareness and lessens the risk of doing something stupid that could result in injury or even death.

Having the ability to be scared is driven deep in our DNA. As an example, when scared, your body sees the situation as a “fight or flight” situation. As a result, the hormone cortisol is released into your bloodstream. Your heartbeat quickens. Capillaries in the extremities narrow to reduce the risk of bleeding in case of an injury and your senses become extremely sharp and honed to a fine edge. Your natural instinct is to get away from the impending danger, however, there are times when you will want to stay and fight.

Your body – both physically and mentally – at this point is prepared to do either; the choice is yours based on your assessment of the situation. Are you going to stay and fight and conquer your fears or are you going to flee and live forever in the shadows of your fear? The choice is really yours. And while people in your sphere of influence can help you make the right decision, ultimately the decision (and consequences of that decision) is all yours.

Email #1 – Welcome to this “scary” ecourse!

Hello and welcome to the series on why you should do things you are scared of. Over this course, we will learn the value and benefits of overcoming your fears, including:

  • What you fear is what you really want
  • Controlling fear or it will control you
  • What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger
  • Cultivating confidence

Fear does serve a real and important purpose. It keeps us out of harm’s way and does that by frightening us to the point where we won’t try something. In some cases, where the result could be debilitating and injurious to our body – even to the point of death, it is good to have that fear.

It is fear that keeps you from ultimately jumping off a cliff. But if you have a parachute strapped to your back, you may the confidence to overcome that fear and make the leap. You know the mechanics of it works because base jumpers do it all the time and survive unscathed.

Eleanor Roosevelt, the wife of President Franklin D Roosevelt, once said You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.’ You must do the thing you think you cannot do.”

In the rest of the lessons, we will dig deeper into overcoming fear and cultivating more confidence so that you can accomplish things that you are afraid to try right now.

That wraps it up for this first lesson. In the next lesson, we will talk about what you fear is what you want. Be sure to read that one.

Can courage be taught?

Courage is a well-respected trait and one that many people pursue, but can it really be taught? Stephen Mansfield, autobiographer of Winston Churchill, once said it could not, though he did immediately follow that statement up with the reassurance that it can be inspired. His wording was chosen very carefully because courage isn’t a skill, it’s a trait. Skills can be taught, but a trait must be honed within oneself. So how can you find inspiration to bring out your courage?

#1 Embrace your fears.

Courage is not the absence of fear. Rather, courageous people embrace their fears. They recognize that they are scared and they trudge forward anyway, not irrespective of their fears but in utter awareness of them. Fear can actually do you favors, in some situations, by making you cautious and keeping you grounded. However, you cannot let them hold you back. Learn to embrace your fears and you will go far.

#2 Don’t hesitate.

Hesitation is the biggest contributor to fear and anxiety. Have you ever noticed that you get more scared about stuff when you have the chance to think it over for a while? That’s because our minds have a way of playing through the worst scenarios in our minds, and the longer we have to anticipate something, the more we are going to fear or potentially dread it. So, avoid hesitation because it’s just going to prolong that anticipation phase and worsen your fears.

Hesitation will also express and encourage self-doubt. Courageous people make a decision and stick with it. Just make sure your decisions are based on your facts, knowledge, beliefs, and feelings. Then they will always take you in the right direction.

#3 Grow yourself.

Living inside your comfort zone is a surefire way to lose sight of courage. It takes a lot of courage just to do something that makes you feel out of your element, but once you give it a few tries, you’re going to find yourself growing as a person. Before you know it, you will easily be able to do things that you didn’t think possible before. It might take a big leap to get started, but that first jump is the hardest by far.

Once you see that good things come from being courageous, you will continue to grow braver and bolder by the day. Embrace it!

Ten Inspirational People Who Have Found Courage

Most people who inspire us due to their courage did not start out wanting to be an inspiration to the world. They simply wanted to fix one thing wrong in their world or show people how to make changes themselves. For others, it was just being in the right place at the right time.

  1. Helen Keller – The first deaf and blind person to get a Bachelor of Arts degree, she was made famous initially due to the story she wrote in her book about the journey to learning. She’s been an outspoken supporter of women’s suffrage, labor rights, and other social issues without fear.
  2. Martin Luther King – His famous “I Have a Dream” speech is widely shared and repeated. MLK was assassinated for standing up for the rights of everyone to have and live their God-given lives in freedom and without fear.
  3. Rosa Parks – She stayed in the front of the bus and refused to give up her seat to a white male passenger because it was wrong. Many people of color fighting discrimination like this died in the fight, but Rosa Parks did this through her fear in hopes that the good it would do would outweigh the problems.
  4. California Female Inmates – Some female inmates have been trained as firefighters. They get paid two bucks an hour to fight fires in California. The program is completely voluntary, and due to the laws, there is no guarantee of getting hired when they get out of prison. They do it because they want to do something helpful and good with their lives while serving their time.
  5. Indra Nooyi – She was the first female chief executive of PepsiCo and was able to boost revenues by 80 percent during her work with them. When she stepped down after 24 years, she posted on LinkedIn some amazing and courageous advice to others about prioritizing time with family and children.

Link – https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/parting-words-i-step-down-ceo-indra-nooyi/

  1. Christiane Amanpour – This woman has traveled the world as a CNN Chief International Consultant. She’s interviewed in war zones and seen a lot of controversies. She has an amazing and courageous ability to cut through the fear and look honestly and transparently at world situations that most would run from.
  2. Yoani Sanchez – Imagine being a journalist but not being allowed to work as one. She reports her observations about Cuba, her home country online, via her blog Generacion Y – giving readers a view of the totalitarian regime and what it’s like to live there.

Link – https://generacionyen.wordpress.com/

  1. Mary McAleese – Elected the second President of Ireland, she dealt with issues such as social equality, social inclusion, and other issues that made her a favorite president and loved by all sides. She was so well loved that she ran unopposed the second term. However, she did often have to deal with some Irish Catholics who did not like her being in office. She and her husband were awarded the Tipperary Peace Prize in 2012.
  2. Irena Sendler – After Poland was invaded by the Nazis, Irena knew she had to do something – even if it meant death. She and her group were responsible for saving about 2500 children who were gotten out and sent to Christian orphanages and given new identities. That’s not all; after being caught and having both her legs broken and being imprisoned and tortured, she worked on reuniting the families after the war.
  3. Elderly Fukushima Volunteers – Once Fukushima was contained, there was a lot of cleaning up to be done. Several elderly people volunteered to do it because they felt that they had already lived a long life. One volunteer stated he had lived 72 years already and he felt that he’d be okay since it would take 20 to 30 years for any cancer caused by the radiation to affect him.

While these examples are extraordinary indeed, any average person can be an example of courage too. Whether you are fighting cancer or fighting in a war or changing diapers, you have courage in you to do amazing things.

How to Develop the Right Mind-Set to Reach your Goals

Have you ever noticed anyone in your life that has a sunny disposition, all the time? Have you also noticed that this individual seems to sail through life, as well? Well, perhaps the right mind set is the key to real and lasting happiness.

At the end of the day, no matter what happens, we have the power to choose our thoughts about that event. Developing the right mind set will help you reach your goals.

There’s Work Involved

Just like anything else in life that is worth having, developing the right mind set has a little bit of work involved. However, this work is not too painful. It really is a matter of training your brain and resetting it to a program you want to replay over and over again.

You must make an effort everyday to listen to how many times the voice of negativity comes to visit. When you hear that voice of negativity that wants to sabotage your success, keep you safe, and makes you fearful, you must work hard to deflate it.

Give that voice of negativity to set in, look deeply into that thought and see if there is anything useful in it for you. For example, if you are feeling fearful about a new endeavor, listen deeply and see if there is any validity to that fear. If not, then chalk it up to self-sabotaging talk and move forward.

Retrain your Brain

Once you have recognized the negative talk and realize it is not valid, move on to the next step, which is to retrain your brain. Take that thought of, “What if I fail?” and change it to “What if I succeed?”

Retraining your brain takes practice every day. The use of positive affirmations is a useful tool in retraining your brain. Although it might feel a bit awkward at first, positive affirmations really do work.

Align Yourself with Success

We all have goals. The difference between those who succeed and those who fail are those who succeed are willing to try. If you are afraid of failure, see how you can turn that around. Maybe failure is a way of learning, but never trying will not equate success.

Align yourself with success by taking on new things. Network in different places, join seminars, take classes to boost your skill set and your confidence. Try something new you have never done before – even if it is public speaking.

Set your own self up for success, put yourself in places where you are bound to succeed, and learn to recognize that even if you fail once or twice, the mere fact that you are trying aligns you with success.

Once you have succeed in smaller steps, you will feel more confident to take on more and more eventually reaching those coveted goals.

A Time for Reflection and Giving Thanks

Introduction

It’s relatively easy to understand how the Plymouth colonists at the first Thanksgiving feast felt deep gratitude not only for food, but for their lives. When Governor Bradford declared the first Thanksgiving meal in 1621, the colonists had come through a harsh and desperate winter.

But how do we, in our modern era, step back and reflect on the solemn nature of Thanksgiving and show appreciation for our blessings? Some aspects of that first Thanksgiving are worth considering, and provide inspiration.

Cultural Cooperation

While celebrating the harvest was nothing new (Europeans and Native Americans had been doing so in various ways for centuries), the cooperative aspect of the first Thanksgiving was unique. The colonists invited American Indians to the meal, including Samoset and Squanto, who had been instrumental in teaching the Pilgrims about medicinal plants, farming, and other secrets of survival in their native land.

The Pilgrims gratefully shared the bounty of their harvest. This is an aspect of Thanksgiving that we can certainly engage in today. Perhaps your family would like to spend Thanksgiving with someone from another country or culture, and ask them to bring traditional foods from their heritage.

The Pilgrims, after all, were eating food foreign to them, such as Indian corn and lobster (yes, lobster was probably served at the first Thanksgiving!). By sharing Thanksgiving with people of another culture, you are sharing your heritage and learning from theirs, much like the first Americans. Celebrating and learning from other cultures is uniquely American, and an appropriate way to appreciate the spirit of Thanksgiving.

Other guests you might consider inviting are those less fortunate than you, people who have experienced (or are experiencing) lean times, or even someone who is simply lonely. Do you know someone in your church or neighborhood who is struggling?

Reaching out to others by opening your home and sharing food and fellowship celebrates the spirit of Thanksgiving. In fact, three years after that first Thanksgiving meal, the Pilgrims experienced a year of drought and the harvest looked as though it might be lost. Governor Bradford declared a day of fasting and prayer, and it finally rained.

The Pilgrims were grateful to God for answering their prayers, and November 29 of 1624 was declared a day of thanksgiving. Invite someone into your home to share your bounty – it might be an answer to someone’s prayer.

On a bigger scale, you could organize a pot-luck style neighborhood or community dinner. Local churches and other charities may be willing to provide the space, and even volunteers to help. Those willing to help can be asked to bring certain dishes. Be sure to invite people of all backgrounds to share, and provide cards with poems or other favors to encourage thoughts of the meaning of Thanksgiving.

Maintaining Balance In Pursuit of Happiness PLR Report – 7324 words

Maintaining Balance In Pursuit of Happiness PLR Report Sample Content:

It’s not always easy to maintain balance in the pursuit of happiness, regardless of how hard you try. Sometimes, life gets seemingly more hectic in what seems like a second. What do you do then? First, take a deep breath and try to relax. Next, try to remember some of what you’ve read in this report. Depending on your personal and professional goals, it may not be as hard to “have it all” as you might think.

Obviously, everyone’s goals are different. Think of how boring life would be, it that wasn’t the case? Never allow anyone to talk you out of what you want in life, unless, it happens to border on the illegal.

All kidding aside, your goals help to make up the person you are. Should you lose sight of them, for whatever reason, you’re losing a tiny part of yourself as well. If that happens, it becomes more difficult achieve balance and enjoy the important things in life.

Typically, when it comes to happiness, everyone’s definition is different. This is partly because no two people are exactly alike. Think about it. What makes one individual happy might only have a slight effect on another.

The First Scientist

Aristotle was a Greek scientist and philosopher in the 4th century B.C. At the age of thirteen, he traveled to Athens so he could continue his education at the academy founded by Plato. He studied at the academy for over twenty years, before leaving to continue his research. For a time, he even tutored Alexander the Great.

He was well known in his time for his writings on many subjects including biology, politics, logic, poetry, and physics. Many of his works are still studied to this day and many of his ideas concerning ethics and psychology are still applicable as well.

To Aristotle, maintaining balance was a key component in the pursuit of happiness. He believed that a strong moral character was one of the most important factors in living a happy life. And, while he recognized that maintaining moral character can be difficult, the effort is rewarded with a happy, fulfilled life.
