They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Does this mean if you suffer from social anxiety, or simply feel awkward in social settings, that you are stuck with those character traits? Must you simply accept the lot you have been given in life, or is there something you can do to improve your social skills?

Building social skills and overcoming social awkwardness and anxiety is the focus of this report.

There are several different types of social anxiety. You may have a clinically diagnosed social anxiety disorder. On the other end of the spectrum, you may just feel slightly uncomfortable coming out of your shell and talking with strangers, especially in an unfamiliar environment.

In the middle of those two extremes is where most people find themselves if they struggle to thrive in social settings. You don’t suffer a full-blown panic attack if forced to socialize. However, there is some level of anxiety involved. For these people, waving at the mailman or sharing a few words with a next-door neighbor of 25 years is not that difficult.

On the other hand, socializing in large groups of people where there are strangers involved can be very hard. In many cases, even if a person is familiar with the people he or she has to interact with, if it is in a social setting, anxiety, frustration and self-doubt can lead to that individual withdrawing rather than engaging.

Overcoming Social Awkwardness by Identifying Your “Big Why

You have probably heard the stories. A frail, weak, tiny elderly person is caring for a grandchild. Something happens, and an extremely heavy object weighing hundreds of pounds falls on the child. There are documented cases of this happening where a child was playing around a car that was up on blocks.

Without thinking twice, the grandparent very easily lifts this object off of the grandchild. How can this happen? Specialists in human physiology have studied these types of events for decades. They find that a rush of adrenaline in the older person’s body was so empowering that it made the impossible possible.

The grandchild was saved because the grandparent had a very clear “Big Why” at work. Why could that elderly person do the seemingly impossible? Because there their reasons for doing so, their motivation, was so large that it overtook physical probabilities. That person so cared for his or her grandchild, and recognized that child as a helpless, special, precious, wonderful gift that virtually nothing would stand in the grandparent’s way of providing safety and love for the child.

What does this have to do with becoming more socially capable?

It is very applicable. You are reading this report right now because you are not happy with your level of social ability. You are probably very determined to improve your social skills. Up till now though, you haven’t been able to. The reason may be because you have not identified a sufficiently important enough reason to do so.

What this means is you need to discover the underlying reason “why” you desire to be more sociable. Is it so you can succeed in a business setting and get your dream job? Perhaps you are tired of being alone and lonely, staring out your window as the world passes you by. Whatever the reason, you need to take some time to really look inside yourself and discover your “Big Why”.

Once you do, keep that idea at the front of your mind. The reason why there is that saying (keep something in the front of your mind) is because that is where your brain’s goal pursuing region is physically located, in the front of your skull. By constantly focusing on the core reason why you want to build strong social skills, you will not let anything get in your way on your path to creating the social skills that you desire.

Recognizing Negative Self-Beliefs

Hi,

What exactly is self-belief?

Your self-beliefs are those things you believe to be undeniably true. You have met people that have a perspective on a situation which seems incredibly irrational and unbelievable. However, if that distorted reality is a powerful belief that person holds near and dear to his heart, it will be next to impossible to change his opinion on the subject or situation.

Self-belief also refers to how capable someone thinks he or she is. When you enjoy high levels of positive self-belief, you are confident and full of self-esteem. You are self-assured in just about any situation. You feel quite certain that you can achieve a successful set of results, even when tossed unprepared into just about any set of circumstances.

The other side of that coin is just as negatively powerful as positive self-belief.

Negative self-beliefs create a dark, dismal reality. You construct a negative perception of yourself, even though these beliefs are many times incorrect.

Look at what beliefs you have that cast a negative light on yourself and your abilities. What beliefs do you have that keep you from trying to become a better, more successful, more complete person? If you staunchly believe something that virtually guarantees you can’t reach some dream or desire that is very important to you, this is a negative self-belief.

Once identified, now all you have to do is replace that negative thought with a positive one. You will learn exactly how to do that in our next email.

To your success,

YOUR NAME

Common Worries of Shy or Insecure People

The benefits of socializing are significant. Social engagement has been proven to strengthen the human immune system. This means that your natural ability to fight infection and disease is strengthened when you spend time with other people. Those that socialize frequently enjoy better mental health and less incidence rates of cancer, diabetes and other problematic health conditions.

Those are a few very good reasons it is so important to fight through feelings of shyness or insecurity.

Insecure individuals are often concerned about what other people think. They don’t realize that in most situations, most of the time, their behavior and actions are not even recognized. They are worried about looking foolish or thought of as a failure, when no one else is really paying that much attention.

Even when others do see you fail, you should not feel insecure. Surround yourself with those supportive individuals and loved ones that care about you. This can keep you from the frequent worry and insecurity that shy people are known for.

Other common worries of shy people are simply not correct. Sometimes an introverted, insecure person suffers from a cognitive distortion. Their view of reality is incorrect, based on a neurological disorder. Other shy people worry that they were born unlikable or exceptionally flawed.

Some are so concerned about their social interactions that they become “mind readers”. They believe they can read the minds of the people they are interacting with, seeing themselves as unapproachable, unlikable and awkward through the eyes of others.

Some are simply so concerned with rejection or lack of approval that they prefer to spend their time on their own. The fear of being ostracized or rejected is so strong that a shy person prefers the sadness of loneliness.

Insecure individuals may also believe that any social mistake will have incredibly negative and harmful consequences. It is important to seek help if you have these feelings. They are usually far from correct, and they can damage your self-esteem. You begin to feel responsible for outcomes that you have no control over, and you miss out on the incredible physical and mental rewards of socializing.

Counseling can help. Simply talking about your problem to friends and family members you trust and respect can also help you overcome shyness. If your insecurity and shy nature are inherited, which is sometimes the case, medications can help you become a more social individual.

Mindsets that Lead to Low Self-Confidence and How to Change Them

If you suffer from low self-confidence, you might be stuck in some negative mindsets that are affecting the way you think about yourself and, ultimately, your self-esteem. Negative mindsets tend to have a lot of “always” or “never” talk, creating a sense of entrapment and hopelessness. Here are some examples of negative mindsets that can lead to low confidence.

“I will never get it right.”

Thinking this way can keep you from trying again, or even trying something for the first time. It makes it only too easy to give up.

“Nobody understands what this is like.”

When you lack self-confidence, a lot of times you assume that everyone else has it together and you’re the odd man or woman out. You may feel isolated, and feel as if others have their lives together while you are still floundering.

“I am totally useless.”

When you lack confidence, you may feel like you don’t have anything of value to contribute, whether it’s to your workplace, relationships, or something else.

“I am a complete failure.”

No one fails at every single thing; but to a person with low self-confidence, it can sure seem that way. You may feel like everything you’ve ever tried has failed, even if this is not true.

“I could never do that.”

Do you see someone with a successful lifestyle you wish you had? If you lack self-confidence, you may have the above reaction. Instead of being inspired and wanting to create that lifestyle for yourself, you look at that person and get depressed, thinking you could never have what they have.

How Can These Mindsets Be Overcome?

In order to overcome these destructive mindsets that lead to low confidence, it’s necessary to reprogram your thought processes. You will need to pay attention to your negative self-talk and immediately change it to something positive.

For example, instead of “I will never get it right,” you could stop that thought in its tracks and think instead, “I have trouble with this, but if I keep trying and seek out the right help, I know I can succeed.” Rather than, “I could never do that,” think, “I would love to do that! There’s no reason why I can’t have that lifestyle if I work at it.”

You may need therapy and/or counseling to overcome these mindsets. But like everything else in life, you can do it if you set realistic goals and have confidence in yourself!

10 Self Help PLR Articles And Tweets

Self Help PLR Articles And Tweets Sample:

Ancient Methods of Self-Help Still in Practice Today

You might be surprised to learn that most of the modern self-help ideas that we practice today really aren’t new ideas at all. Every modern book that you’ve read on self-help, including “The Power of Positive Thinking” by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, came from ideas from the past – even ancient ideas.

* Yoga – This method of self-care has been around for eons and comes from Asia. There are many different types of Yoga practice today that purport to help everyone take care of mind, body and spirit.

* Prayer – Studies have shown that prayer changes brain chemistry and helps people who pray positively to have more positive lives and feel happier. Various types of prayer has been around since civilization started and likely before. By giving over problems to a higher being, humans have found ways to become happier.

* Meditation – Originating in Asian countries, meditation has actually appeared in many different cultures as a way to relax, focus on big questions, and try to access parts of our mind that we don’t know how to get to. Today, mediation is thought to lower blood pressure and help people with serious diseases deal with treatment better.

* Positive Thinking – You might think of this as new-age but nothing could be further from the truth. The idea of positive thinking actually started with the Greek philosopher Aristotle. Today, positive thinking can be seen in books and programs like “The Secret”.

* Self-Acceptance – Some people believe that everything is derived from fate and that our lives are preordained. So, to be truly happy you have to come to acceptance of the divine, and control your actions through self-discipline rather than try to control what happens.

* Self-Sufficiency – Epicurus taught that the best way to be happy is to try to experience a lack of pain. And that you can do that through surrounding yourself with friends and family and experiencing pleasure as much as possible, but not in a hedonistic sort of way. But, we ourselves are responsible for our happiness, not outside forces.

* The Golden Rule – Confucius is said to have come up with the idea of treating others as you would have them treat you. Today, this can be said to be the “Dr. Phil” style idea: that you show people how to treat you by how you treat them and yourself. You set the standard and the idea on what can be done to you and around you.

* Self-Actualization – The Greek philosopher Plato came up with the idea that you needed to study yourself deeply to understand and uncover the gifts that God has given you so that you can find your true purpose. You can find some of these ideas presented in the book “The Purpose Driven Life” by Rick Warren.

As you see most of these self-help methods were started long before you were born. They were just repackaged into new by various authors, doctors and theologians as their own ideas. Some of these self-help masters are not so straightforward about where their ideas came from, whilst others quote directly from the ancient philosophers.

Message # 1 Subject line: Your First Understanding Anxiety & Panic Issue

Hello “autoresponder code here”,

Welcome to your first issue of Understanding Anxiety & Panic.

In each issue of Understanding Anxiety & Panic you will learn valuable information that will help you learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of anxiety attacks

It’s a simple fact of life, everyone worries, has concerns, gets nervous and feels certain fears, experiences and apprehensions at some point in their lives. Often one or more of these emotions happens on a daily basis.

Did you know that to a certain degree, anxiousness is actually healthy, because it enables the body to react to certain stimuli and causes us to take action and perform better?

As long as the feeling is relative to the situation or problem at hand, it is perfectly normal.

However, when anxiety gets severe, chronic and irrational, you might already have an anxiety disorder and experience episodes of anxiety attacks.

Common symptoms include of an anxiety attack are:

The fear of going crazy.

Sometimes when a person is under tremendous pressure they may feel as if they are going crazy. This is even more evident during time of an anxiety attack.

If this has ever happened to you I want to assure you that there is very little possibility that you are really going crazy. It is far more likely that you are not going crazy and it is only a symptom that you are experiencing.

How can I be so sure?

Because going crazy is not a conscious act and people who are suffering from mental illnesses don’t even know that they have one.

Again, if you are experiencing excessive fear or irrational thoughts, you are not going crazy.

Dry mouth

This is another common symptom and is a natural occurrence during and anxiety attack. To counter dry mouth just sip on water or try a piece of hard candy to stimulate the production of saliva.

Shaking and shivering

These  are two necessary functions that your body uses to keep your temperature normal. When body temperature drops from normal, the muscles spasmodically contract, creating friction between muscles and body tissues, thus increasing the body temperature. During anxiety attacks, shaking and shivering is normal.

Heart palpitations

These are also common during an attack. You may feel like your heart is missing beats. This is caused by the release of adrenaline into the bloodstream. This is perfectly normal and can’t cause damage to your physical well being. However, it can cause discomfort and lead to more severe symptoms if you don’t learn how to control your attacks.

Body pain

Feeling pain in your neck, shoulders, jaw, mouth and stomach, as well as having a headache is also common. When the body is under stress, parts of the body usually get tense, which results in pain. Do your best to try and relax if this occurs.

Chest pain

This is a normal body reaction to an anxiety attack because of muscle tension. Sometimes, chest pain is misinterpreted as a heart attack, but it is important to identify from one another as the latter can be deadly.

Shortness of breath

This is the most distressing symptom of anxiety attack. It feels like your chest can’t  expand to take in the necessary air that your body needs. If you experience this there are three important points that you should remind yourself of and that is that you will not suffocate, stop breathing or pass out. This is a temporary symptom of your anxiety attack.

Feeling detached

This symptom of an anxiety attack alters the way you experience yourself and the way you see reality. It makes you feel like everything around you is a dream, foggy or unreal.

While recognizing the signs and symptoms of anxiety doesn’t

require you to understand the workings of the human body, what it does require is awareness on each of the symptoms and the effects that they may have when they are ignored.

Please be aware that different people manifest different symptoms and behaviors when experiencing an anxiety attack.

The intensity of the symptoms differs as well and may appear different with every attack.

If you experience effects that last well after the attack has passed it is important to consult a health professional, so that you can be sure that there aren’t any other underlying conditions that you should be aware of.

Understanding anxiety is the first step towards controlling the effect that it has on your life, so do your best to learn everything you can

about how it can affect you.

Make sure you look for your next issue soon. We will be talking

about panic attacks and the symptoms that come along with them.

We will also talk about panic disorder and agoraphobia.
