Techniques to Help You Become More Present

One technique that makes people happy is to live in the present. Sadly though, many people live in the past. They carry around emotional baggage from things that happened to them long ago and all it accomplishes is to bring down their level of happiness to a lower point. When in fact they should kick that baggage to the curb and concentrate their energy on living in the here and now. What happened happened and there is nothing one can do today to change that. So why keep beating yourself up about it. Learn from it yes, but dwell on it, no.

And there is not a lot of happiness gained from thinking about the future. That has not happened yet, and most likely we don’t have much control over it anyway. Again, yes, it is prudent to be prepared, but to spend time running “what if” scenarios through our mind is fruitless and unproductive. If you are one that would like to live more in the present instead of the past or future, there are some techniques that can help.

Yoga

With yoga, it wraps three of the techniques: exercising, meditation and breathing all into one. While each in itself is powerful, the three together are dynamic. With yoga, the exercises performed are called asanas, but at the heart of most types of yoga are the other two – breathing and meditation.

Focusing on breathing is a way to forget about the past as your breathing is something you are doing in the present. Concentrate on the intake, holding and exhaling of your breath. Notice how your heart rate drops a few beats per minute when practicing breathing.

Meditation is the same up to a point in that it helps you learn how to view thoughts that come across your mind now, but without judging them. It is almost as if you are sitting back and viewing a movie of your current thoughts. This higher level of awareness helps you better understand your thoughts and, in the process, become a more positive and happier person.

Exercise

Exercising alone can increase your level of happiness. Why? Because in doing so, your brain releases endorphins which bring about a euphoric state known as a “runner’s high”.

While the term suggests that you must run to get this benefit, most exercise done on a consistent basis multiple times per week will produce the effect. And the effect can be addictive (but in a good way). People look forward to the feeling of happiness which makes them want to continue to keep exercising. This leads to an increase in both physical and mental health which helps sustain that level of happiness.

Hello and welcome to the series on how to quickly make yourself happier. Over the course of these lessons, we will cover several different tips and techniques you can use to increase your level of happiness quickly – some methods quicker than others.

It is not uncommon for us to occasionally get into a funk now and then where we are not as happy as we could or should be. There can be several reasons for this occasional negative mood swing. If you can tie your mood swing to certain “triggers”, one readily apparent way around it would be to eliminate the triggers that start your downward happiness spiral in the first place.

One trigger for many people who are unhappy is their work. In a 2013 Gallup poll, they found only 13% of the people surveyed reported they were “happily engaged in work”.  One way for the 87% that were are not would be for them to find a job that they can be happy doing. I know, it is not as easy as it sounds. But keep in mind, this is just an example of something within their control they could do to make them happier (and something to get the thinking juices flowing in you).

Some people think they would be happier if they had more money, but that is not always true either. In a University of Illinois study, they found that people making $10 million a year were only microscopically happier than their underlings working for them that made much less.

Others think their level of unhappiness has to do with their genetic background and life circumstances, but that is not always true either. In a University of California study, they found these two elements in a person’s life only accounted for 50% of their happiness. So, it is easy to assume the other 50% is what you make of your situation.

That wraps it up for this first lesson. In the next lesson, we will start to talk about some other ways to make yourself happier. Be sure to read that one.

Putting yourself first is a difficult concept for many people, especially those who have spent decades helping others rather than putting themselves as a priority.

  1. Comparing yourself

You will never be somebody else, so why bother comparing yourself to somebody else? Whether it’s your sister, your brother, your best friend, your partner, or your work colleagues – comparing yourself to other people never helps anybody. When you find yourself comparing yourself, think instead about your positive qualities and what makes you the person you are.

  1. Trying to be in control

It’s difficult to be in control of everything in your life – in fact it’s impossible. You never know what’s going to happen, and while you can plan, worry and put all the right measures in place, you can still never be in total control. And that’s okay – you can take the necessary precautions to eliminate as many problems as possible, but worrying about being in full control can lead to sadness and disappointment.

Whether it’s self-care, buying yourself something nice on occasions, or going after your dreams, saying no to yourself too many times for too long can have a negative impact on the way you feel. Clear tape and glue can be good options as well, but obviously, both do have a tendency to wear out over time, so you have to get used to re-gluing or re-taping pictures.

What Is Good Motivational Material?

In terms of motivational material, you can use whatever you want. It’s very difficult to give recommendations here because each person is so different and motivated by different things. Some people may want to put pictures of their family. Others may want to put pictures of what they want to achieve (big house, nice retirement, etc.).

Money Brings Stresses of Its Own

There is stress that goes along with having money. Whether you have a little or a lot, you likely know about this stress. There is the stress of knowing you need to spend what you have wisely, as well as the fact that people with ulterior motives are drawn to those who are financially wealthy.

Not About What Comes in But What Goes Out

It is not so much the amount of money that you make that ensures your happiness, but about what you are spending it on and where it is going on the way out. There are some principles for using money that can help you to feel more satisfied. Where you put your money and who receives it can make a difference as to whether you gained something by having had it.

Spend on Experiences, Not Things

Buying more things is not proven to make a person happy. Although investing in items that will last seems like a wise move, studies show that we tend to adjust to what we obtain. Having these things doesn’t continue bringing unlimited happiness.

We are more likely to have long-term happiness when money is spent on experiences which will give us lasting memories. Whether this means going on vacation by yourself or with your family, or making time to do something fun every now and then… be sure to create experiences rather than purchasing something that will simply fade away over time.

Giving is one of the most satisfying things you can do with your money. Whether it is to charity or a friend in need, find a way to give back and share what you have. This is a way to spend that will bring long-term personal rewards.
