5 Important Points to Note When Working the Soil

In organic gardening, one of the most important factors to pay attention to is the soil you’re using. Your success at gardening is directly related to the quality of the soil that your plants are growing in. It’s imperative that you get it right.

If your soil is fertile, your plants will thrive. If it’s of poor quality, your plants will struggle to grow and you may notice that your crops start developing nutrient deficiencies.

It’s best to curb your initial enthusiasm when starting out and first ascertain if the soil is suitable for growing plants. It can take several weeks to prepare soil that’s unworkable. So, it’s best to start in advance.

1. Testing the soil

Ideally, you should use a soil testing kit to check the pH value of the soil. If it’s low on the scale, that means the soil is acidic and you’ll need to add some compost to neutralize it. If the number on the scale is high, the soil is too alkaline. You may then add iron sulfate or sphagnum peat to make the soil more acidic.

2. To till or not to till

Tilling the garden will aerate it. The soil will be looser and contain more air. However, the downside to this is that soil tillage will cause some erosion because winds may blow the soil particles away. So, you can expect a small amount of soil loss.

When beginning an organic garden, it’s best to only till it the first time. After that, you’ll just maintain the soil with compost and other natural methods to keep it healthy.

3. Drainage

If too much water collects in the soil, your plants/seedlings will perish. You’ll need some form of drainage to allow excess water to flow away. If your garden is sloping or at a slight angle, you may notice that water collects at certain places during rainy weather. So, you’ll want to give those areas more attention.

Use a soil moisture meter to know how wet the soil is. A general rule of thumb is not to overwater your crops. Instead of using a water hose that sprays water from a gushing tap, stick to using a lightweight watering can and gently water the plants as you walk around the garden, ensuring that the water is lightly but evenly distributed.

4. Compacted soil

Unlike potting soil, which is loose and contains more air, topsoil tends to be tighter and more compact. This situation is worsened if there is lots of foot traffic on the soil. Planting seeds in compact soil will stifle the plants’ ability to breathe.

Before working on your garden, you may wish to place tiles or stepping stones to form a path around your garden that can be used for walking on. The planting areas will be close to the path so you can work on the soil, but you’ll not be stepping on the soil since you’re on the path.

5. Soil properties

It’s also important to know the properties of the soil you’re working with and choose the crops accordingly. Some soils are suitable for only specific plants. There is no one-soil-fits-all scenario.
It’s easier to cultivate plants in loamy soil than clay soil.
