How to Track Your Habits

The quote by management consultant, Peter Drucker, “What gets measured, gets managed” is especially applicable when it comes to building new habits. Trying to break old habits and replacing them with new, better ones is usually an uphill battle.

Your mind and body will rebel against change and you’ll need to instil the new habits slowly and repeatedly. Herein lies the problem – you must be consistent with the new habits for them to take root in your behavior loop.

  • How to build a habit

Initially, its best to practice the new habits daily for about 30 to 66 days. Limit yourself to 1 or 2 new habits at a time. This will prevent you from feeling overwhelmed. Furthermore, it requires energy to maintain new habits.

If you try to do too much too soon, you won’t have enough mental energy to summon the willpower necessary to follow through on the habits. So, less is more here. After a month of following 1 or 2 habits, you may slowly introduce a 3rd habit.

By the time you reach day 66, the first 2 habits will be second nature to you. Habit #3 will be much easier to follow… and now you can adopt the 4th habit gradually. And on and on it goes.

  • Tracking your habits

The simplest way to do it is with a journal. Since you’re only adopting about 2 habits at a time, you just need to write the 2 habits and the dates and check off each day you follow through. The goal is to never miss a day and to keep the chain of check marks going.

Alternatively, there are apps, calendars, habit trackers and many other choices out there for you to choose from. Which way you go is up to you – but it’s best to keep it simple and also visible.

You want to be looking at your habits daily just so that you’re on track and nothing is left to chance.

  • What should you track?

This can vary from individual to individual. Generally, people track their:

  • Fitness
  • Diet
  • Self-care
  • Hobbies
  • Work commitments

It all depends on what your goals are. If you’re trying to lose weight and get in shape, you’d be tracking your exercise and diet habits. It’s important to know that a single goal may require multiple habits.

For example, weight loss will require you to eat at a caloric deficit daily. This will have to be a habit until you reach your desired weight. Not only that, you’ll need to drink enough water, consume less processed food, exercise daily, get enough sleep and practice intermittent fasting if you choose to.

That’s already 6 habits… and they’re tied to just one goal. So, you’ll have to be realistic with your goal setting and understand how the habits required from one goal may leave you drained and impact other areas of your life.
